4 years later and here I am watching all these videos about this beautiful product. I just ordered a Mac Pro 7, 1 from eBay in pristine condition but used for $2100. It's got the 16 Core processor with 96 GB Ram and 2 TB SSD. I was thinking it would take me 10 years to be able to buy one but here I am. I can't wait to start using it and have plans for some upgrades. Real good video and well explained, thank you I enjoyed it.

Marques Brownlee forgive me, but this is the best unboxing and first impressions (and try outs), for the new Mac Pro yet do. Great work Jeff. Hope to have one with XDR Display (or 2) here too and soon.

You can spend a mere $6, 000 for a ho-hum 8-core Xeon system, a tiny SSD and no out-of-the-box drive expansion or upgrade options, or spend way too much for something that will probably be outperformed by a far cheaper Core i9, Ryzen 9 or Threadripper system.
Buyer beware: There is no way to add a hard drive or SSD to the new Mac Pro without buying expensive additional hardware ($400!) and you cannot replace the included SSD due to its being tied to the T2 chip. Oh, and power cables for a third-party graphics card will also run you an extra $80.

I bit the bullet. I bought the 16 core version, (will upgrade when processors come down). 192gb ram through OWC, one Vega pro II Duo mix module, 8TB SSD, 1 XDR monitor, 2x LG 5k displays. Ho RE SEDT... the monitor, there are no words. the render speed? no words... the expandability? no words... FCPX performance? No Words. Buying it felt like passing a soft ball sized gaul stone, but I am glad I sacked up and did it.

Working on an SSD raid option for primary online storage... some good choices out there. still shopping/comparing.

Primary job is effects editing 4kk & 8k video. handles it like nothing. doesn't even break a sweat.

Why does it *start* at 5, 990? An 8 core, 32GB ram, 580x pro, and a 256GB SSD. If you have $6000 you could get a 64 core 3990x with more ram, storage, and better video card.

This machine would be a compelling option for most pro users rich enough to buy one if
Apple and Nvidia could be persuaded to work together on GPU support.

The worst thing is the T2 chip. Apple could brick these at anytime.
The second worst thing is only 1 year/90Day bring it in to the store warranty for $6000.
It should be 3 years and at home.
Third is you have to buy an adapter to put in 4 spinning drives, and no internal optical drive bays.
two things the former mac pro had for free.
Fourth is bottom of the barrel base spec, we are talking under $1000 dollar PC specs, which would actually perform better at most things.
So if you are not going to upgrade in the future, this is a terrible buy.


The good thing is this is a worthy modern successor to the Mac Pro towers from 2006-2012.
We are still great computers and useful because you can upgrade them after the fact and are pretty much as fast or faster than every mac computer in most things except this one when upgraded with the latest video cards, nvme storage, raid inside without pegasus, and 12 core cpu on the cheap.
and some have even hacked thunderbolt cards to work.
