Song Lyrics:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning, I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

[Verse 2: Chris Martin]
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemies' eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead, long live the king"
One minute, I held the key
Next, the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

[Chorus: Chris Martin]
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'
Roman cavalry choirs are singin'
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone, there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

[Verse 3: Chris Martin]
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
And revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string (Mmm, mmm)
Aw, who would ever wanna be king?

[Chorus: Chris Martin]
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'
Roman cavalry choirs are singin'
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

[Bridge: Brian Eno, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland & Will Champion]
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh

(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
Hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
Roman cavalry choirs are singin'
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
My missionaries in a foreign field
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
For some reason I can't explain
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

[Outro]
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Mmm, mmm

"Viva la Vida" by Coldplay always gives me revolutionary vibes. The lyrics, especially "Now the old king is dead, long live the king, " remind me so much of King Louis XVI and the dramatic fall of his reign during the French Revolution. The imagery of "Roman cavalry choirs" and the regretful tone of "I know Saint Peter won't be calling my name" evoke powerful feelings of lost glory and personal reflection.

Side note | I believe his attempted escape was a much-misunderstood act.

It’s amazing to think what we humans can do. This is a perfect example. Not to just make a legendary, timeless song, but to unite very different people. You may live in a different country, have a different religion, look different to me, but we all have come together to listen to this, may you have a great day!

To me this song signifies lost youth when you feel to be at the top of world and when that is gone everything feels so empty

The beauty of this song for me is how they captured the sound and vibe of this song with classical sounding instruments. I need more music like this

I can't belive this song comes out when I was 40 y.o . It's hard to realize how fast the time goes by. How many memories since then 😢😢😢

For anyone wondering, this song is an interpretation of King Louis XVI's lost final speech before his death following the French Revolution. It's written in Louis' point of view as he apologizes to his people and accepts his demise. For some background, Louis was imprisoned and publicly executed by his own people following his downfall. When he was marched to the guillotine for execution he attempted to give one last speech to his people before his death, but the French revolutionists booed and the executioners drums were played louder to drown out the sounds of his words. As so, before Louis could finish his speech he was forced into the guillotine and beheaded, his final words now lost forever.

I used to game a lot back when I was younger, currently 24, but I just listen to this song just remembering how gaming used to be when I was a Kid, no worries, no caring to the world just me and my Playstation 1, 2, 3 then 4 in my teenage days, but now in college barely having time to play and finding how my younger siblings I used to teach and finding them beating me easily which I'm actually happy that they, is cause I teached them how to play the games, and just know figuring out how my father felt when he was teaching me the games he plays and I see myself beating him and I'm happy, when I was young now I understood the proud feeling he has when he finds me beating the games he teached and beating him in it and yet even when he became older I also take him and encourage him to play the new Story games that gets released even he's not good at them I still encourage him and I feel proud that he beats them, currently watched him beat Mw1+2 Remastereds WW2 and other games that he considers hard, yet I'm here telling him dad, it's okay I brought you here to enjoy your time not to see if a game is hard or not, even if he beats the game in the easiest difficulty I'm still proud that I spent time watching him play the games just how I used to when I was a kid

And yes I'm writing this with Tears all falling knowing these memories are good but they will never last forever that's why enjoy your time with the family you love, cause neither you or them are gonna stay there forever

If bangers like this doesn't keep existing in the afterlife, then the existence doesn't make any sense.

This song makes me think of the past but in a good way, it doesnt make sad because its over, it makes me smile because it happened, and it gives me hope for the future, few songs can do this to me, I like it.

This song was memed to death years ago. Now newer listeners take this as a joke.

However, this song is a tale of life and hubris.

No matter what happens In life, don’t take anything for granted. You never know how long you have left with it.

I used to have a wild imagination. Imagining a world of fantasy is my peace of mind when I was a child. This song gets me emotional, it pierces through my heart.
