Coldplay - Viva La Vida (Lyrics)

Coldplay

Lyrics
[Verse 1: Chris Martin]
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

[Verse 2: Chris Martin]
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
Now the old King is dead, long live the King
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

[Chorus: Chris Martin]
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

[Verse 3: Chris Martin]
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh, who would ever want to be king?

[Chorus: Chris Martin]
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

[Bridge: Will, Jonny, Guy, Brian]
Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh

[Breakdown: Chris Martin & Will, Jonny, Guy & Brian]
(Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh) I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
(Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh) Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
(Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh) Be my mirror, my sword and shield
(Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh) My missionaries in a foreign field
(Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh) For some reason I can't explain
(Oh-oh-woah, oh-oh, oh) I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

[Outro]
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Mmm, mmm...

Fun fact for people who don't know this, Viva la Vida is based on the French Revolution and King Louis's final speech. Louis was overthrown by his own people and sentenced to death. Before execution he tried to say his speech but the revolutionists didn't care and rushed his execution. This song seems to paint King Louis as regretful for being a bad King.

fun fact: this song is about The last king of France, i, e. Louis XVI. During the FRENCH REVOLUTION, He was executed and was hated by his own people due to numerous mistakes he made. He was hated so much that he was not even allowed to give his last speech to his civilians, few minutes before being executed. This song describes his feelings on the day of execution, and what speech he would have given if he had been allowed to express.

I’m 68 and just found this song after watching Suits. Never had time for the show or much music. Loved the show and can’t get the song out of my head. If ever there was a song for the generations this is it!😢

There are so many parts to this song. I close my eyes and pay attention to something I haven’t heard before: a bell, a violin, a background vocal, a lyric that just hits me differently, and just like that...It feels like I’m hearing it for the first time all over again. Without a doubt, one of my favorite songs of all time. ❤️

This used to be one of my favorite songs as a kid. I had memorized all of the lyrics at one point and would sing them alone in my room at night. It is amazing how you understand the lyrics as you get older and the meaning and relevance of the song completely changes for you.

This song is so much more powerful and sad when you know it's about King Louis XVI. Now whenever I listen to this, I mourn a man who could've been one of the great inventors, who never wanted to be king, who was forced to marry at 15 and take charge of a struggling nation at 19, who suffered from terrible shyness, who had to endure public mockery for his difficulty in producing an heir, who feared his wife would try to manipulate him and placated her with lavish parties that made them both the subject of resentment, who went to his death not even allowed to speak his final words in full and believing he'd go to Hell for being a bad king, who was buried in an unmarked grave, and who was then demonized by the history books for ages to come.

POV: It’s 2016 again, the middle of summer. It’s midnight and you can’t get to sleep because of the intense heat, so you get up from your bed, the fan softly humming beside you. You open your window, lean out and breathe in the smell of grass, crickets chirping in your garden. The streetlights glow a warm orange and you hear the quiet noises of cars driving down the road beside your house. Your mouth dry, but you can’t be bothered to go downstairs and grab a glass of water. You go back to bed and lay there, sweat dripping down your forehead. The sound of this song echoes around your room. You must have left the music on again, but it's somehow soothing.
Oh how I miss those days.

This song always reminds me of being a superhero/villain and watching the sunrise/sunset on the roof of a skyscraper, watching the sun pour over the city they own/look after. The beauty of being completely immersed in the streets, shops, avenues, crosswalks, and corners of your hometown. I wish I could direct a movie scene like that, the hero just watches. Admiring all of it below, peacefully.
