Rick's channel is like a masterclass, but it's free.

While music is important in my life to the highest degree. It wasnt until I started watching your channel that I began to appreciate it and not just my normal genres but all genres. Ive learned more in a year than in the last 40+ years with this channel. Cheers!

As a theremin player, I am happy to hear such cheerful music in one of my favorite music channels

Absolutely love horror soundtrack tropes. Such an interesting and under appreciated style of music.

Horror music is quite an interesting situation I'd say, it's technically not suppose to be pleasant to the ears, but it's without a doubt iconic. Also I definitely clicked to learn about the science of the music.

Great episode. I too loved "Dark Shadows" & watched it after school. The theme from "The Night Stalker" is great & "Zodiac" had some effective music as well.

I'm a creator based in Bali but my day job is working as a music teacher at an international school here in Bali. I watch your channel every day, Rick and I really appreciate your content! Going to be buying The Beato Book and registering in the Ear Training course soon! 🙏🙏🙏

From the content of the comment sections, the schools just emptied into the streets -- kids running home from school to watch Dark Shadows. It became like an afterschool ritual, esp when mom/dad was out working. Quite comforting in it's slow-moving weirdness. I remember WABC (New York) playing Quentins Theme, which seems a bit odd to me now.

Thank you Rick, for yet another face of music. The soundtracks we choose in our youth stay with us forever. (Poor kids)

1) Fascinating! I love everything you do, Rick!
2) Music is such an important (and underrated) component of the movie watching experience.
3) My grandmother was a pianist in a silent movie theater. She had a huge Hammond organ with a Leslie cabinet in her living room and would entertain her grandkids with the various musical themes she used to convey actions or emotions to the audience.
4) Any love for the late Andy Gill?

Of the ones you examine here, the "Halloween" theme is the most disturbing. It has the feeling of obsessive madness and something that cannot be stopped. As far as music creating tension, Kubrick's choices for "The Shining" (he used music better than any director) were astoundingly great. Bartok's "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta" has a variety of the elements you mentioned, and creates incredible tension and anxiety in the listener.

I almost forgot about Dark Shadows. I to used to rush home from school to watch Dark Shadows in the afternoon. Thanks for bringing back the good memories

I love the soundtracks that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross create. Brooding, atmospheric, electronic soundscapes.

One Step Beyond theme still gives me chills.
I used to watch it as a teenager.

"Rick can't possibly conjure up just any instrument!"

Rick: "Hold my beer, gotta grab my upright bass."

I've always been interested in this topic. The concept of music creating the perfect atmosphere for fear is really intriguing. I heard it was low and deep sounds and screeching that makes the human brain create hormones for fear.

2:32 Let me guess. You came up with Slow and Screeching and your daughters brought up Fast Glissandos, Min 6/9, Min+7, Sus, Augmented and Dissonant Intervals.

My father had that One Step Beyond album. I loved it as a kid, and later in life I've tried to remember what album it was to hear it again. Thank you, Rick. I can't express how much this means to me.

Awesome breakdown of some iconic music! I must say, Mr. Beato, the thing I love the most about your channel is your passion and enthusiasm for all things musical. But also? Your multi-instrumental abilities, perfect pitch, and patience for explaining without a trace of condescension are appreciated, as there are some watchers, myself included, who do not read music. It is so cool to see someone really doing what moves them for a living. Thank you for your enjoyable creative content!
