How to pass your MOT / driving test & don't get conned when buying a used car
Short term learner insurance

Carrying out routine checks on your car is a vital part of making sure it is safe and fit for the road, this is why all cars over 3 years require a yearly MOT, however did you know just because you have a valid MOT it does not mean your vehicle is road worthy! Why? Well the vehicle may well have been road worthy when the MOT was taken, however a problem could have developed after said MOT, therefore the only way to check your vehicle is safe is to do routine checks yourself.

Whilst these routine checks do not guarantee the vehicle is road worthy, only a trained mechanic can give a vehicle a comprehensive safely check, they do give you some peace of mind.

The checks can be summarised as POWDER checks, this involves checking:

- Petrol - Is there enough for your journey?
- Oil - Is it at the correct level?
- Water - Engine coolant, brake fluid and washer fluid all at the correct level?
- Damage - Any obvious damage or anything loose?
- Electrics - All lights working? Warning lights on dashboard?
- Rubber - Tyres in good condition? What about your wiper blades?

Carrying out these checks should be done at least once a month and when you are use to doing it should take no longer than 10-20 minutes, if that!

As well as doing these vehicle checks routinely I would suggest doing them:

- Before taking your vehicle for an MOT
- Before taking your vehicle to a driving test
- Before buying a used car, especially from a private seller
- Before signing for a hire car

These checks also form a very large part of the 'show me tell me' questions on the UK driving test, so by going over these checks you will improve your understand of said questions.

Also when checking your engine coolant have a look inside if it’s cool. If it looks gloopy that means the head gasket is on the way out and oil is mixing with engine coolant
