How to Set Up a Betta Fish Tank - Step by Step

Setting up a Betta fish tank can be extremely easy with the right information. First, start by getting yourself a tank that is over 5 gallons in size. Even though Betta fish are sold in small cups from retail stores that doesn’t mean they can live in tiny environments. They thrive in 5 gallon tanks, and larger. Second, you’re going to need to get an aquarium heater. Figure on needing 5 watts of energy in your heater for every 1 gallon of water you have.

Your beta fish tank is also going to need a filter. I have found that sponge filters worked the best in beta fish tanks because they are very low flow. Betta fish struggle with filters that have too much flow you can also add aquarium sand or gravel to your beta fish tank. There are a lot of different options when it comes to plant gravel as well.

Male betta fish should not be kept with other fish. You can keep female betta fish with other fish because they are a little less aggressive. Make sure to thoroughly research on how to keep female betta fish together. Male beta fish are extremely aggressive and will fight to the death, and it’s not safe to keep them with other fish.

the thing about 5+ gallons, the fish is much more active and fun to own in a bigger tank. in a bowl they just sit there, in a 5-10gallon they interact with their environment and you more

This video is highly detailed but the cycle part wasn’t explained properly in my opinion. A lot of people would ask what to do if ammonia levels r there or are high.

You would probably have a heart attack if you saw how i took care of my first betta when i was a kid. 1 gallon tank. No filter. No heater. It lived for two years before it passed away. Now ive got 1 in a fluval spec V and its very happy.

y’all i had betta’s growing up as a kid but i feel i remember that they died quite often. like maybe within a couple months to a year.
and now i’m an adult and i want to have a pet betta again. i got one from my aunty, he lasted a month with me and sadly passed away shortly after this last time i changed the water in his tank.

i just bought a new a beta fish.
i have ~about~ 2 gallons of water in his tank. i just put fresh tap water in it.

i also bought this thing called “water conditioner for betta’s” and put the correct amount of drops in the tank.

i have two colorful decorations in his tank. one is a fake rock he can hide in with colorful plants on it and the other is a brightly colored fake plant.

his tank also has an LED light as one of the walls (the back wall) that can change color.

and i’m gonna use a carbon filter in the tank.

and i’m gonna wait overnight to add the fish to the tank. (for now he’s just gonna stay in the container the pet store had him in.)

i’ve heard betta’s may need a heater in their tank but i live in Hawaii… and it’s summer rn. the “room temperature” water is already luke warm. it’s normally around 70°-80° here in Hawaii. so i don’t plan on putting a heater in the tank.

is all of this okay for like a basic beta tank? ik most people get betta’s and just throw them in some bowl or vase with tap water and leave it at that and their fishes are fine for years but i wanna give my fish the best care i can. i don’t have a lot of money though so i’m just looking for the basics and bare minimum to make sure my fish is healthy and happy for as long as he shall live. any tips are appreciated!

What kind of lighting is needed? Is it only needed if you have live plants?

For a beginner video, you probably lost people at that particular part, because you didn't actually explain what "cycling" is or why it is needed.

Thank you so much for this video. So helpful! I am going to set up my first tank and this video really made it so easy for me to understand. Just a quick question, if i stick the rhizome plants on the rocks. Do I still need aquatic soil for substrate or can I use sand as substrate?

Really enjoy your videos. I have a female baby Betta in a five gallon tank with sand, live plants, snails, and driftwood. How often does the water need to be changed and how much?

Cool video i keep and spawn bettas for 12 years and i keep them in 20-24°C water. But i keep ahort fin plakat and dragon types. This longfin types are so overbreeded som too much risky for my project. Shortfin can live 4years with no problem but olny one important is live food for me

I bought a betta and he is in a cycled 3 and 1/2 gallon tank. I want to move him into a 10 gallon aquarium when it is cycled... I will be putting a cycle sponge filter in it... What's the best way to transfer him? I will make sure the temperature is the same and I'm assuming the water parameters will be the same since I'll be using dechlorinated tap water.

Can you recommend and show how to use a sponge filter? I had one and my tank just didn't filter enough, and I'm not sure if that was user error or just a cheap pump
