Eric and Bret Weinstein and the End of History

Bret and Eric Weinstein have been on a mission to save the world. As we've seen in the last two videos they want to save humanity which is itself the cause of our crisis. After the Cold War Francis Fukuyama imagined that from then on out it would be Democratic capitalism that brought in the eschaton, but no such luck. The Intellectual Dark Web, or what's left of it after the recession of the first Jordan Peterson wave is trying to have a religious conversation while trying to avoid religion and it isn't working. Religion is the longest continuous conversation on the planet. What might the prophet Isaiah have to say in this? A lot.

“Trying to save the world is the source of every utopian nightmare.” 24:50 Nailed it.

“The Church has been unable to facilitate it [the good stuff] and bringing it to a starving world. And that's what Peterson did in his biblical series.“ Spot on! That's brilliant, Paul.

If I could give this video a thousand thumbs up, I would.

I'd wager that the near death of JBP's wife and his consequent ordeal would've pushed JBP to existential limits where he began to review a lot of things. Pain changes your perspective. I hope he shares it with us.

In this discussion about the cultural ceiling I had two thoughts:
1) Theological ceiling = cultural ceiling: Vervaeke Ep 3 --> Your embodied theology is the grammar you use to put your thoughts together. You inherit that from your culture.
2) Our concept of time as a story with a climax and resolution (Vervake Ep3) is what our drive for progress is embedded in. This is integral to our grammar.

Therefore, if you want to change 2) you can only do it by transforming 1). You inevitably dabble into theology, knowing or not.

Even as an avowed agnostic, I would follow any Christian church before following the likes of Eric and Brett Weinstein. They have no idea what they are advocating for.

I’ve really been enjoying your content. One issue is I’m out of the loop. I know a decent amount about Peterson and I’ve listen to both Winstines on rogan. I feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start and a real path to learning about this stuff. I’m sure this is too much for a YouTube comment. I tried signing up for a talk but there were no slots open. If you are free to talk at any point I’m working from home so time I have.

Right on, Paul!!
Thank you for working through these things, out loud!
Your gifts at doing this are blessing us all!

"Plato as the author of the most celebrated utopia of all, he was a fervent admirer of Sparta. That is not because he was a militarist. As he wrote, war is neither educational nor a game. Yet he knew full well that, in the long run, no community can survive without armed force. To Plato, the origins of external war were luxury, the effeminacy to which it led, and the enemies it attracted." [M van Creveld]

I've listened to 3 of your monologues in a row. Well done... Paul!

The comments about JBP around 13:45 are pretty thoughtful. I think many public commentators begin to have a "voice" in our heads, such that when presented with a question, we almost know how that public voice would react before they do. Some of the popular youtube atheists suffer from this. When their content ceases to be "fresh, " then their viewership decreases.

I don't think that JBP is any more of a one trick pony than most other public voices, I just think he has a distinct voice, especially if someone has consumed hundreds of hours of his lectures. How many times can you hear a lecture about the 12 rules? 12? Once for each rule? But some of them are not s complex to take up a whole lecture. After that, he needed to cmmentate on more topics to keep his analysis and perspective fresh. You and I both think he should have progressed to Exodus, since his commentary on Genesis was (in my opinion) revolutionary and captivating. At the very least, he needed to go back to teaching or writing another book. A book like 12 Rules was more palatable for a wide audience, but that also makes it by necessity a shallow text in comparison to say, the Bible. Not something to base endless lectures on.

Hi Paul.

Interestingly, this time of uncertainty has placed me in a position of being much more in demand by remaining/sustaining aspects of our society amidst what is otherwise a dramatic shutdown both economically and socially. As a music producer, educator of a mostly upper middle-class clientele, essential service provider, and a lay-intellectual committed to bringing value to my community through the development and propagation of ideas that can inform the pursuit of authentically meaning lives, I seem to have- intentionally or not- forged a career that is thriving and growing, at least for now. I believe this is the case because people, by virtue of not being able to engage in the otherwise normal daily distractions of their busy-but-existentially empty lives, are now forced to seek the most plausible sources of meaning. As you indicate, our normal sources of distraction like work, video games, pornography, live sports, eating, narrative entertainment (Netflix, movie theaters, YouTube, etc.), going to restaurants, and many other amenities of American life now seem relatively empty in the light of such a dramatic shift in our perspective imposed by this threat of disease and possible illness and/or death.

As such, I now have friends who, having recognized my focus on cultivating some modicum of wisdom through philosophical and perhaps even religious pursuit, are now asking me to teach them and their young families about The Bible and my perspective on it's meaning and ability to inform our lives. I'd love to talk with you about this profound responsibility that I am being called to provide for my community as I think you're perspective would be very illuminating...

Maybe by Thom Pace (Grizzly Adams theme song). I still get emotional listening to it, and nostalgic for my younger, optimistic, dreamy self. Naff, to some, I suppose!

Love Peterson, want him to come out of the dragons den soon actually. helped me out through some very difficult ideas (also still chewing through his series on youtube) however, one thing I did notice as he was doing his tour was this; I think he stagnated at a certain point, stopped pushing his thoughts further wrestling deeper. Because the more I listened the it seemed similar to things he said in the past.. almost like a script (now this could just be due to the fact similar questions were asked through multiple iterations and he wasent being challenged enough, or the seriousness which he took the ideas were not being taking seriously by his intellectual equals, or he got interested in different pursuits) but I wonder if that is what you are referring? These other members of the (former?) IDW dont try to go into the realm as peterson did. However that's just my opinion, and I am biased lol. Of course there is also the possibility I need to delve deeper into the meaning of Jordan's project (and that I'm missing some other aspects, so that would be a more personal failing on my part.

Love your videos and your thoughts Paul. Honestly I don't know why people are interested in what they (the Weinstein brothers) have to say (take away the Evergreen incident and they wouldn't be in the position they're in). I understand that more viewers will watch the videos with them in the title but honestly, I don't think they're even in your league Paul. If you want their opinion on anything, just look up "what does evolutionary psychology say about..." and you'll find everything you need. Very one-note.
