In this video, power over ethernet technology has been explained, which is also commonly known as PoE.

What is PoE?

Power over Ethernet is the technology, in which along with the data, power is also carried on the ethernet cables, which can be used to power up the networked devices, like IP Phone, IP cameras, Access points etc.

Now to carry the power over this Ethernet data cables, certain IEEE standards are defined.

3) IEEE 802.3. bt

These standards define certain properties of the established link, like what is the maximum DC power which can be safely transferred over the network cables, what is the range of DC voltage, what should be the cable resistance, what is the allowable maximum current over the link etc.

Advantages of PoE:

The advantage of PoE is that installation of Ethernet connected devices to the inaccessible locations where it is difficult to provide power supply or where too many cables are in the way. Also, there is no need for the separate cable for the powering up the devices. So, using PoE it is possible to maximise the savings on the installation cost.

PoE terminologies:

Power Source Equipment(PSE):

The device or equipment which supplies power to the networked devices is known as PSE. e,g Network Switch

Powered Devices (PD):

The devices, which receives power over the ethernet cables are known as Powered Devices. (e.g IP cameras, Acces points, IP telephone etc.)

The timestamps for the different topics in the video is given below:

0:33 What is PoE?

1:24 Advantages of PoE

2:16 PoE Terminology

2:30 Signalling in PoE (To check whether the connected device is PoE enabled or not?)

5:42 Cable Connectivity in PoE (Type A and Type B)

This video will be helpful to everyone in understanding the Power over Ethernet (PoE) Technology.

PoE is here to stay. (15, 4W) = af
PoE+ (25, 4W) = at
PoE++ (55W ore more) = bt
And PoC ! = 100W to the unit and a New cable for function) = 2 cables today; = bt
In the FUTURE to all AP with need 2 cables ore more (I think)
If we work with PoC.
Ore some NEW that we today don´t know about.

Thanks for a great explanation. Especially on types vs. power / mA !
Question: Can I connect a device which has it's own powersource (i.e. thermostat) through electricity socket (220V) also on POE-port (Even when while it is powered through socket ?
In other words as I understood from your explanation: It doesn't matter how the PD is powered up. The POE-port on switch will first send a signal to PD asking if it needs power. If not or if it has its own power supply (i.e. 220-socket) then it tells POE-switch that no POE-power is necessary. Therefor the POE-switch will send zero (0V) power to PD, but WILL continue to send data. Correct.
I need this info because I want to buy my first managed switch with either combined POE and non POE-ports or - depending on your feedbcak) all POE-possible - ports only some won't be supplying power as the device has it's own power supply.
Thanks for your feedback.

HI!
I have a quick question:
Any IP camera (which has also an ethernet connector) can be connected to the network using PoE?
Are there any specifications for voltage?

Question: If a switch supports 802.3af and 802.3at, does it mean it can power an end device which only accepts power from spare pair? how will i know if the device requires an additional power adaptor? Also, why do some devices accept power only through mode b? because most switches work by default on mode A

Great tutorial because you explain and talk at a good pace and voice but when it got to the electronic diagrams I got lost, lol.

Hello Sir, Can I use PoE to connect a 750 GB or 1TB external USB drive to my ethernet. I have the USB to ethernet convertor. I would like to know if PoE will provide enough power. I understand PoE comes in two standards 15 watts and 30 watts. Google says an external hard drive takes about 15 to 30 watts. So will this work? Thanks in advance.
