I just read his piece on Fox News on his new recommendation for a pledge Republicans should proclaim. It includes a promise to ensure that people with pre-existing conditions will have access to affordable coverage. But the only PLAN for KEEPING that promise is "high-risk pools". A high-risk pool would be people who already have pre-existing conditions or known risk-factors for getting an expensive illness or injury. Providing coverage to a special group of people with those high-risk/expensive conditions cannot possibly be done "affordably". If all the people in your insurance-group are already expensive to care for or likely to become so, then you can't cover them affordably without including low-risk, cheaper subscribers in your pool; there's no one to redistribute the risk to. It's as if he were promising to set up a special fire-insurance company which would only insure people whose houses were already on fire. Or a special flood-insurance pool for people who lived on ground-level in Venice. If you agreed to charge them an "affordable" rate, you'd go bankrupt immediately.

Newt is correct. Start with bills that the Democrats can support, like an infrastructure bill, that will actually help the American people. Democrats will also support a healthcare bill that makes improvements to Obamacare. With enough Democratic support, the Republicans wouldn't have to worry about having the Freedom Caucus votes who only want to gut government sponsored healthcare altogether.
