This is a tutorial explaining Virutal Machine software, what VirtualBox open source software is, and a basic into on how to use it. It then covers how to create a new guest vm and install Windows XP.

Run Windows on Mac. Run Mac on Windows. Run Linux of Windows. Run Linux on Mac. Run Mac on Linux. Run Windows on Linux

VirtualBox is Open Source software, and is available to you for free. It is a great alternative to VMWare and Parallels.

A video showing how to get/make the iso for various OS would be VERY useful. I've seen this request alot and seems about time someone did a vid on it. :)

What happens now in the year 2017 when XP is no longer supported? I need it to run programs from that time ago and have it up and running now in VirtualBox but have no idea whatsoever as to how to install other software that I need (Visual Basic), which comes in three 'Floppies'.... I disc copied these discs and placed them in C: drive and hit Setup and it worked until it needed to read (obviously) something from Drive A: In short the question is 'How to set up Vis Bas in VirtualBox running XP'? And what do you do about Activating the XP when its no longer supported by Microsoft?

Thanks for the video, it has helped me set up VR machines well. I do have a question, I'm trying to set a machine up for my parents using a copy of windows 7 I no longer need (make it legit). I follow this video to the letter but get an error when the VR machine starts>> "ata2 master: Unknown device". I have tried several ISO's also for win8, 8.1, 10 and Ubuntu with the same error. I'm at a loss for why as I've done this more than a few time on my machine with no problems, but this is also the first time doing this on a Ryzen (using an MSI x470 with a 2600 CPU) set up too. Any thoughts?

Hi, I'm just getting into VM's and doing this to help have a deeper understanding for my class. When I open it says FATAL: No bootable medium found! I'm pretty sure I don't have a key aspect of what I need, which I guess is the medium, and would really love it if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

@mcfcfan33 I think what is happening is that it is trying to boot to the hard drive rather than your Windows installation media.

Before starting the virtual machine, click on the storage link in the right hand pane. Make sure that you have a virtual CD/DVD drive listed there. It will probably say "Host Drive (something)". Make sure that is set to the CD/DVD drive with the installation media in it, or that you have the ISO image selected.

Hopefully that is just set wrong
