It gave me smug pleasure that I knew the Nunciature was in Wimbledon - I used to work nearby and can remember seeing the Papal tiara on the gateposts, with the crossed keys in the background😏 I also knew Pope comes from papa, that he was Bp of Rome, Abp/Metro of the province, successor, sovereign and servant.... but what even Sandi's huge mind neglected was Pontifex Maximus - the last word in building/mending bridges🙂 Bet Stephen Fry would have mentioned that😆❤❤❤

Technically speaking, the pope is still the same as the old ‘pontifex maximus’ of Rome - the highest priest. Julius Caesar and later emperors had this title. And this is one of the pope’s titles nowadays, of course (small change: summus pontifex instead of pontifex maximus). Of course, this had to do with popes labeling themselves after Roman emperors and pretending to be the rightful successors to the Roman world.
