I had no idea I was using a pinch grip. This was illuminating, thank you.

When it was observed that my forefinger sat 'off the rim' and was corrected, it was very uncomfortable and my grip was an iron vise. However, my first throws with the 'new' grip proved to all of us playing that round that it was the right way to go. I got the nose down and distance increased immediately. Now that I find it more comfortable, I have managed to slightly loosen the power grip and I get the sensation of the disc rolling out of my hand and consistency of the release point has also increased.
So, listen to Scott and do whatever it takes to get four fingers firmly up against the inside of the rim and the thumb pressed in to the edge of the flight plate. You'll probably start throwing it into the ground early because you've been used to throwing nose up. Lower the reach back, and ta-da!

Placement of Thumb...."Rule of Thumb?". 4 finger grip=grip lock, for me. They say if you pull through correctly, you can't hang on to the disc. That rule does nit work for me. I use a putter like, fan grip. Oh, I'm 73 and throw fairly consistently out to 180'.

So i just started 2 months ago and I just cant get anything outside of one finger below, I call it like a pencil grip because it feels like I am holding a pencil in a way... I mean.. is this going to hurt me in the future should I force to get comfortable with more? Bare-in-mind I am a climber and a golfer as well so my grip strength is extremely high

I’ve never understood why the power grip doesn’t work for me. At 6’4” I absolutely have the same issue as you, just not to the same degree I would imagine. I’ve thrown pinch grip the entire time I’ve played disc golf because it just felt right. I also just realised that I only grip with 3 fingers, due to the position my other fingers default to to get the best grip.
Very helpful video to bring awareness to grip.

Scott Stokely is the man. His videos pointed out all the mistakes I was making and watching him my game has improved so much!!!

Hey Scott! What I would love to see addressed is something I heard right after I started playing less than a year ago. That is, let the disc tear itself from your grip as opposed to actively releasing it. More specifically, would this apply to an older, noodle armed player like me. PEACE!

Well i also have big ole hands and the power grip does not work well for me. Going to try the pinch grip. Just holding and practice throwing in the house it seems to feel better. Hope it works!

I genuinely thought I was going insane. I have massive hands (looks the same as you, lanky fingers 😂) and I couldn't get a standard power grip to feel quite right. I thought having bigger hands would make it "easier" but seeing the pinch grip, and trying it now, has been a MASSIVE game changer.

6'7"! I look forward to looking up to you when you grace our shores in NZ, Scott! I am just a tiddler at 6'0".

Further to the disc golf grip: One ultra-important rule you didn't mention is that when you have formed your grip, your index knuckle must be ABOVE the parting line of the disc. If that knuckle is below the parting line, then the vast majority of men do not possess enough ulnar deviation to flatten the disc, and all throws will be nose up.

I'd love to see what's going on when released. For whatever reason I'm still stuck at 300ft and try different grips and the actual science of the release is never talked about, what goes on with a perfect release???

The pinch grip makes sense to me in terms of a cleaner release. Going to give it a go.

Its gives me so much to think about and use to break past the point of where im at and start shaping things to what is comfortable and works for me. Using power grip is uncomfortable with 4 maybe ill use 3 and see if its the pinky or pointer that needs movin and try the pinch grip i dont think i have ever held a backhand drive like that

I struggle constantly with grip. I like the point you made about tucking it tightly into the palm of the hand as an anchor point thereby eliminating variables.

I've recently started doing a weird thing where I start the throw with four fingers then as I'm completing my pull, I shift to two fingers and it's making my drives fly way straighter and more consistently. Maybe going a little less far but staying on the fairway.
