TO PRESS or NOT TO PRESS when PUTTING | Phil Mickelson
Should I forward press or shouldn't I when putting is the question. The downside of a forward press can often get the golfers hands so far ahead it it delofts the putter face driving the golf ball into the ground, but a forward press is also good because it allows the golfer to accomplish the one goal that is important in putting which is continuing the golfers hands down the target putting line. When our hands get behind the putter face it's harder to continue down the target line properly. When the hands are ahead of the putter face it's much easier to continue down the target line. What we want to do is keep it minimal (in regards to a forward press). Phil Mickelson recommends a very slight forward press to help promote a sensation that promotes the hands ahead of the putter face through the stroke. This way you won't change the angle of the putter face but still utilize the sensation benefit of a forward press. This is a personal preference and it really comes down to the individual and their personal putting stroke.
