Graceful freestyle swimming

Knowing how to swim smooth freestyle is essential for lap swimmers, triathletes, open water swimmers, waterpolo players, crossfit athletes and basically anyone wanting to swim as a workout.

The first thing to note is the position of the body. The more horizontal your body is, the easier it will be to swim though the water without a lot of resistance. The main issue people have is that their legs sink. To compensate they start kicking faster, then they get tired and their legs sink.

The next thing to master is to reduce excess drag. Advanced swimmers actually use very little energy to go forward while swimming smooth freestyle. This is because they have reduced the drag of their bodies as much as possible. One big part of it is the legs. Try to avoid bending your knees too much. For smooth freestyle doing a few narrow kicks, maybe one or two per stroke, should be enough to keep your legs a float. Finally point your ankles in plantar flexion, this will reduce your drag a substantial amount and will help you swim smoothly.

If you want to take your smooth freestyle to the next level, work on your core. It will give you stabilization for a better horizontal position. Work also one your flexibility. This will give you a better range of motion and reduce drag.

this guy has really good form, but if anyone is having trouble keeping their feet up they should remember to look straight down while swimming, this relaxes your neck muscles and elevates your hips. hope this helps!

He swims like there's no chance of drowning... that must be nice.
If I stop, I'm going down, lol.

I am a noob and had been struggling with breathing. Felt like dying of heart attack after just one lap. i have been swimming your way, taking it slow for two days now. today when i stepped out the pool i wasn’t exhausted. no more drinking pool water when breathing during swim. Thanks a lot :bows

These are mistakes i had been making that i corrected after watching this channel’s videos:
1) keeping my head too deep in water, always ended up drinking water after breathing
2) lifting head to breath, rolling by side actually helps maintain balance
3) most important, exhale until water cleared of mouth when breathing. SAVED me from water entering my nose and panicked swimming.

What you said about beginners having too much air in their lungs to stay balanced really made sense to me. With that being true and having large legs because of being an avid cyclist I always struggled to maintain a good horizontal position. Very helpful information.

1
00:00:00, 492 --> 00:00:11, 463
Smooth Freestyle

2
00:00:12, 827 --> 00:00:24, 957
Knowing how to swim smooth freestyle is essential for lap swimmers, triathletes, open water swimmers, waterpolo players, crossfit athletes and basically anyone wanting to swim as a workout.

3
00:00:25, 029 --> 00:00:28, 356
The first thing to note is the position of the body.

4
00:00:28, 558 --> 00:00:35, 998
The more horizontal your body is, the easier it will be to swim though the water without a lot of resistance.

5
00:00:36, 310 --> 00:00:39, 673
The main issue people have is that their legs sink.

6
00:00:39, 737 --> 00:00:45, 041
To compensate they start kicking faster, then they get tired and their legs sink.

7
00:00:45, 155 --> 00:00:49, 604
The reason the legs sink and the upper body float is the lungs.

8
00:00:49, 699 --> 00:00:52, 901
The lungs of a beginner are always full.

9
00:00:53, 015 --> 00:00:57, 837
This causes the upper body to float more and the legs to sink.

10
00:00:57, 965 --> 00:01:06, 286
It is better to have just enough air in the lungs to do a few strokes and exhale underwater before taking a small breath.

11
00:01:06, 384 --> 00:01:12, 503
This will sink your head and upper body a little, making it easier to lift your hips.

12
00:01:12, 623 --> 00:01:17, 907
To master this technique, it is essential to know how to breathe properly.

13
00:01:17, 986 --> 00:01:22, 002
That’s why I made the freestyle breathing video.

14
00:01:22, 073 --> 00:01:25, 951
The next thing to master is to reduce excess drag.

15
00:01:26, 202 --> 00:01:32, 700
Advanced swimmers actually use very little energy to go forward while swimming smooth freestyle.

16
00:01:32, 828 --> 00:01:37, 024
This is because they have reduced the drag of their bodies as much as possible.

17
00:01:37, 254 --> 00:01:39, 847
One big part of it is the legs.

18
00:01:39, 936 --> 00:01:42, 929
Try to avoid bending your knees too much.

19
00:01:43, 156 --> 00:01:51, 250
For smooth freestyle doing a few narrow kicks, maybe one or two per stroke, should be enough to keep your legs a float.

20
00:01:51, 447 --> 00:01:54, 772
Finally point your ankles in plantar flexion.

21
00:01:54, 985 --> 00:01:59, 306
This will reduce your drag a substantial amount and will help you swim smoothly.

22
00:02:01, 741 --> 00:02:05, 792
This exercise will help you swim a smoother freestyle.

23
00:02:06, 128 --> 00:02:18, 953
By having your arm above the water for a longer stretch of time, you will struggle to find a way to stay a float and use the muscles necessary to counter act that.

24
00:02:19, 711 --> 00:02:30, 747
You will also create a correct pathway with your hand in the recovery stage.

25
00:02:31, 858 --> 00:02:37, 131
If you want to take your smooth freestyle to the next level, work on your core.

26
00:02:37, 232 --> 00:02:41, 833
It will give you stabilization for a better horizontal position.

27
00:02:42, 002 --> 00:02:44, 479
Work also one your flexibility.

28
00:02:44, 580 --> 00:02:49, 449
This will give you a better range of motion and reduce drag.

One thing that helped me get more planer was swim fins. I was pretty fat. The fins helped get my legs up, distribute the effort and helped be build the core and upper body tone and endurance. Once I got my distance up, I weaned off the fins and my legs stayed up without them. Now my butt nearly rises out. :D
The only laps that I splash a bit are when I mix in 100 sprint sets.
My daily swim is 6.4KM (more on weekends), 5 a week.
Smooth is fast :D

I just want to tell you I love your videos. I consider my instructor to be one of the best and you teach the same way, I am getting better at my freestyle slowly, I injured my right bicep when I increased weights too quickly. It has affected my advancing in my freestyle but I won't give up, I'm resting those muscles and compensating. The most important thing is constant practice and proper form. I am strengthening my core and have noticed as I do my flutter kicks improve as do some other strokes. Thank you for the great videos!

Thank you. I swim in a lap pool next to someone that thinks splashing like a flailing seal while they do their freestyle makes them Phelps ❤

I am a new lap swimmer, not being able to take technique lessons bc of the covid19 mess I was trying to find a good source, this is by far the best new swimmer ( technique wise) video anywhere! Explaining why my legs sink is totally new info !! Thank you!

If you're having trouble, I don't consciously think about taking the right amount of breath, it's likely just a normal breath for me with freestyle. So if your legs are sinking it's probably part the breath and part you do need to kick properly - I think body shape will also influence it a bit. I'd recommend working on your overall comfort in the water. Keep swimming more and more, practice your underwater dolphin kicks, mix up the speeds of your strokes and have a good time. Never panic, you should be comfortable floating, and treading water.

This helped me a lot thanks! I just started swimming like 2 months ago and I'm the fastest developing student thanks to your videos!

I’m 73 now but I love the first few lengths I do when I get in a pool especially if it’s only me in the lane. It all feels effortless and smoothe. However, I then quickly get out of breath and my muscles tire. Then my stroke gets ugly and I’m in survival mode for the rest of the session. That doesn’t stop me doing up to 100 lengths in an hour (mixed crawl and breaststroke) and in any case swimming for fitness is about effort expended rather than distance and efficiency isn’t it? I’ve only just come across your you tube videos so hopefully I can improve!
