The most important description about your confused patient

You know our profession had to attach a descriptor to the term 'confused'. I don't know about you, but your assignment and your shift are opposite ends of the spectrum when that descriptor is not attached.

Would you rather hear "confused" or "pleasantly confused".

'nuff said.

Until next time...

Tehehe....I love my older people. Honestly, after dealing with younger patients during clinicals I have come to have a whole new appreciation for them.

If they're pleasantly confused it's a good chance that they're not going to BITE!! LOL

I've been nursing for 34 years and yes "pleasantly confused" has been around since before time.

I find that this prefix is also used to describe psychosis. When I hear that a patient is pleasantly confused or psychotic, that tells me the chances of shenanigans are significantly reduced.

I will take "pleasantly confused" over simply "confused" any day! It's the sweetest most content person versus the one whose strength rivals Wonder Woman whenever they kick/punch/slap/bite and yells at you whenever you try to do any care. The simply confused patient will purse whip you, call you all kinds of foul names, try to get you to surrender (because you're a member of the enemy's army) in any way possible, not to mention the placement of bodily fluids and body parts in places they should not be....I'll leave that one to your imagination.... May the word "pleasantly" always come before "confused" when describing your patients! XD

Oh my gosh, the things I’ve never considered before becoming a nurse 😂

thankfully my resident in my current clinicals (my 1st one as a PCT student) is "pleasantly confused" 87% of the time.

Pleasantly confused: Cooperative, willing to talk, possibly tangential/flight of ideas, but those really make my night. At the very least I will have a "why I work in psych" war story.

Confused: Paranoid, thinks the voices have great ideas, thinks the staff are demons trying to poison them, and willing to protect themselves. The "I must be crazy to work in psych" patients.

End of the day, I love them both, because at least in my setting, both tend to get better.

My most memorable “Confused” patient without the word “Pleasantly” attached to it had me in a choke hold by my name tag lanyard with my face two inches from the floor which was covered in blood. She had fallen and couldn’t understand I was trying to help her up. She near killed me and only weighed 80 pounds soaking wet. For those of you who haven’t seen Sean’s video about lanyards, I highly suggest you look 👀 it
