The Man Who Calculated His Death Date. #history

Abraham de Moivre, a brilliant mathematician, noticed that he was sleeping 15 minutes longer each day as he got older. Using math, he predicted the exact day he would sleep for 24 hours—his death! That day was November 27, 1754, and shockingly, he died on that exact date!

Was this just a coincidence or the power of mathematics? Let us know in the comments!

The mind is a powerful thing. he didn't predict he would die on that day, he BELIEVED he would die on that day

All this shows is how powerful psychology is, people die from broken hearts all the time. If you tell yourself and others constantly i will die on this day your body will believe you

In heaven he must have written "Hence Proved"...
Edit: I had never expected to get so many likes. Thankyou everyone.

Are we just gonna ignore the fact that bro slept for 23 hrs 45 mins on November 26 1754 😭🙏

How depressing it must be to know the day you die

In most of the comments i saw, people saying him sleeping 23 hours and something before his day of death and telling that this thing is bullshit, or it is actually it is his state of mind that actually did it, mind is indeed very powerful and can sometime change the reality around you but you also have to consider about his works on probability and complex analysis. His model would indeed say, he would sleep 23 hours and some more minutes but that's how just mathematical models work. They won't tell you the result that will be exactly going to happen after a point of time but they can mostly accurately predict when the solution equation of the model decreases to zero.Which in his model was the time of his death.Than due to his brilliance the model was so accurate it did predict the accurate time of his death which is when the model decays to zero. This is how this type of models work. They are basically differential equations whose solutions decay to zero.I am now in my last year of masters in mathematics. So i am kind of familiar of this kind of stuff. So i thoughts i needed to explain.By the way, thank you if you read this large complicated mathematical explanation.Good day.

Imagine waking up on November 26 knowing that today will be the last day you’re alive. terrifying

You’re expecting me to believe this guy slept for over 23 hours for the last 4 days of his life, woke up for less than an hour and called it a day? That’s most likely bs but if it’s not that’s some insane dedication to die

Dude this guy is sooo useful for complex numbers students
Trust me, youll love his theory

The main issue with the story of Abraham de Moivre predicting his death is the lack of direct historical documentation from reliable sources of his time. Here are the key gaps in evidence:

1. No primary sources – There are no letters, journals, or writings from de Moivre himself where he records this supposed prediction. If he had truly made such a precise calculation, one would expect some written record.

2. Late appearances of the story – The earliest known mention of this anecdote comes from secondary sources long after his death. These sources are often anecdotal and lack verification.

3. No scientific backing for the 15-minute sleep increase – There's no known medical or physiological basis for the claim that de Moivre’s sleep increased by exactly 15 minutes daily until he reached 24 hours. It sounds more like a neatly packaged legend rather than a documented phenomenon.

4. Death prediction is not mentioned in early biographies – Some of the earliest accounts of de Moivre’s life, including those by his peers, do not mention this claim, suggesting it was added later as a myth.

5. Potential exaggeration or misinterpretation – Many historical stories tend to be exaggerated over time, especially when they involve an element of mystery or irony. It’s possible that the story emerged from a casual remark de Moivre made about feeling increasingly tired, which later transformed into the legend we hear today.

So while it’s a fascinating tale, there's no strong historical proof that de Moivre actually predicted his death in the way the legend suggests.

Real explanation: The thing is belief
if you think that you become rich by all your heart and soul, then no one can stop you, same as that. He believes that he is going to die on November 27 1754, so he dies

So he woke up for 15 min on November 26, 1754 .

Great mathematician

I thank to all for this much likes i have never got that much !
