What people tend to not understand when they learn about these people in school, is that these are humans. They were not monkey like in the slightest, and these people talked, laughed, cried, painted, sailed, cooked, and buried one another.

I reckon the uncanny valley effect is an evolutionary left over from when our ancestors had to differentiate between homosapiens and non homosapiens. I also think seeing as almost all cultures have folklore about ogres, trolls, goblins and elves I think this could have originated as homosapiens encountering other homanids and passing stories down. Seeing as the last neanderthals died out only 30 thousand years ago I don't think it's too out there.
