In the late 70s, MARVEL and TOEI forged a partnership that would allow swapping of intellectual properties. While MARVEL never really took advantage of this, TOEI did - and the result was a Japanese exclusive of Spider-Man.

In this episode, we take a look at what the adventures of Takuya Yamashiro were all about.

The history of Japanese Spider Man is FASCINATING! Plus, I loved the Honest trailer that was done for the show as well.

My favourite bit of Toei Spider-man trivia is that the Leopardon suit was stolen partway through production, so for the rest of the series, they had to make due with recycled footage of it.

"I don't know why Disney wouldn't want to monetize the toy potential."

I don't know if Disney has any rights to the merch but Bandai has continued to take advantage of it. They released various figures such as a figuarts (which also release Kamen Rider and MCU figures) as well as several versions of Leopardon. Most recently giving the license to good smile for nendroids of Spidey and Leopardon.

It would be awesome if the Japanese Spider-Man made a cameo in Spider-Verse.

I find it interesting that even though marvellor/leopardon was an inspiration to introduce giant robots to Sentai, it has one major difference. Unlike the later sentai robots, it’s not a combiner...

They need to remake this so bad, it would be amazing with so updated visuals

Without this series we would have never gotten megazords, as this series was the reason super sentai added giant robots into the series- since up until that point sentai teams did not have zords AT ALL

actually this Spiderman series did have a sequel in Battle Fever J. Battle Fever J was to be a Japanese Avengers show whose leader being Captain Japan instead of Captain American. Battle Fever through Sun Vulcan were part of the Marvel Toei colab period. the first two snetai series were prior to Japanese Spiderman Goranger and JAKQ.

"Without Spider-man there would not have been... Voltron."

Voltron's designer, Katsuhi Murakami, also designed Leopardon years before.

The lack of overall structure & the constant repetition of the mech footage weren't by design. It was a hastily improvised solution to two huge problems: the show having no money, and the show not having its giant robot around. Here's the explanation: part way through its production run, the Leopardon suit had become damaged by the various explosions and such it had to endure on set. The suit was sent out to an outside party for repairs, whereupon the suit...disappeared. There has never been any definitive word as to exactly how this happened, but the bottom line was that they no longer had a giant robot available, and still had a significant number of episodes left to shoot (and in some cases, re-write). So, the existing mech footage was duly recycled over and over again, since they had neither the time nor the budget to build a new Leopardon suit. They were scrambling to fill the sometimes huge holes left by Leopardon's absence. When taking this into account, it's remarkable that they managed to complete as many episodes as they did.

I heard that the Leopardon suit was stolen through Production.

I hope that Disney/Marvel gets the license and they would throw it on Disney+ so more people can discover this obscure piece of Spider-Man history

As opposed to saying the series was chock full o' "filler episodes, " you could just say the series is primarily "episodic" rather than "serialized."

And now this version of Pete gets to kick as much ass as anyone in the modern comics, so much for denying his existence aye?
