He didn’t bully, he purposefully agitated him to get the most out of that 17yr old.

Look how quickly he builds rapport. “You frightened? DON’T BE FRIGHTENED BROTHER! Where you from? Jamaica?? Put your hands up.” The smoothest ice break to bring the guy to level was a simple homeland check.

Now this is what tough love actually is. People sometimes say that shit to justify abuse but this is sincere support for the young man. Try to light a fight in his belly to make him better and the compliment at the end for positive affirmation. Ali was a pure soul.

This is the perfect example of how the master brings out the best in a pupil. Harnessing their emotions to create a state that pushes them, and it isn't until afterwards that you realize they were doing to help you. When he says, "Yeah he's pretty good", you realize everything he said was to bring out that excellence in the young man. That's why I love Ali, he was the best, he was the master and a teacher full of humility.

He got him to shift his focus from being intimidated by Ali to proving himself. He knew just how to motivate him.

That was the era of real mentors and coaches - he pushed his buttons to shed his hesitation and then gave him a compliment to boost his confidence & reward him.

Also taught him a lesson - as a fighter you don’t get nervous or back down from anyone (even your idols).
