I have a herniated disk in my spine, this squat helps stretch everything out, relieves pressure, and reduces my pain considerably. It has taken lots of practice and stretching to be able to do this.

Europeans/Western people tend to have shortened tendons in their legs which makes it harder to do the Asian squat. And why do many of us have those shortened tendons? If you go and look at childhood pictures or kids around you, you'll notice European/Western kids DO THE SQUAT, they just.. stop.. and then, because we stop and thereby stop stretching, our tendons get comfy at a shorter length. (Something I assume happened to Dan as well)
So the Asian Squat can also help flexibility!

My Dad learned the squat when he was with MAAG in Viet Nam. He really liked it. Soldiers could squat, fire a few quick rounds and get up quickly and advance. This gave them stable position to shoot from and let them move quickly. This was especially useful during the monsoon season as they weren't getting their uniforms wet like you would firing from prone, kneeling, or sitting position.

I love the Asian squat. It aligns my back. I learned it at my old job and it made my knees feel so much better too. Its the only way I "sit" now. I started doing at my new work and they were like, you ok? Are you hurt? Nope just making my world a better place. Lol.

i already learned how to do this a couple months ago, it hurt my shin muscle for a couple of days but after awhile i got used to it and i got more flexible in my calves so it's easier now.

Westerners=can't even last 10 seconds
Asians= infinity....

I don't get why Westerners can't do it(or maybe some can)
