Google nuked the account of a father who had to take certain pictures of his child for a doctor. The crazy part is that the father didn’t even upload the photos to Google Drive, his Pixel phone just automatically backed up the photos and triggered the automoderator.

As for privacy - just put encrypted archives or files on the cloud. The only one having the decryption key is you.

old laptop running off an msata disk where the wifi card one was, SSD where the disc drive was and most older machines also had a dedicated slot for an ssd.

Me: How many times can you say Nas in a video

Zach: YES

This video offers terrible advice if you're looking to prevent any important files from being lost.

If you ACTUALLY care about not losing your files, this isn't a "pick one or the other" situation, you either pick cloud storage or both. A NAS should not be used as a reliable backup whatsoever.

There's so much more that can go wrong storing important files with a NAS compared to the servers owned by multibillion dollar companies.

This video's mistake can cost a viewer out there to lose their precious data. Please, Zack. Do better.

I like my Synology that I use with 4 bays and RAID-5 and incremental backup to a remote lication. Perfect fit for me, since all.I usually store is some code samples and some documents. Oh, and photos from my phone goes there automatically.

For privacy - encrypt your data before uploading it to the cloud (and obviously dont use passwords like 123 to derive a key)

It’s recommended to do 2 backups:
One local
One offsite

This can and is usually done via one backup being a NAS or onsite server and one backup being in the cloud or self-managed server somewhere offsite.

Tips: If you are broke like me that google drive/one drive is still using free tier, backup your most important info(like some certs and pkeys, which is not that huge) to the cloud encrypted, while others not so important ones in your nas(that might be huge). It's not you can only use one of the solutions, but you can use all of them.

another win for cloud storage is if you are on the go, you can access it anywhere

I have a DS923+ and love it. I only have a few files that need to be backed up (financial info, resume, etc...) and the rest can be replaced. Considering AI is on the rise, putting stuff in the cloud is a recipe for disaster.

Hey zach!! Im from India I wanted to tell you that if I had a chance to build a PC my budget would probably be nearly 1 lack rupees that is about 1189 US dollars I know that I will get more value of my money if I build my PC in India but I will always prefer to buy a prebuild from zach's tech turf. I trust and respect you a lot. I have learnt so many things from you and you are an awesome guy and I always learn new things from you .❤

Also the Speeds on a Local nas are higher than on a cloud based one (if you have less than Gigabit internet at home and you cheap out on switches and/or the nas)
