SWING HARD OR SWING FAST So MANY GET THIS WRONG

Swing hard or swing fast with Mark Crossfield golf professional. Mark talks about getting the most power from your golf swing and trying to hit the best golf tee shots you can. When it comes to creating more club head speed should you swing hard or should you swing fast and what really does that mean. With the use of 3d force plates and launch monitors Mark talks about creating more golf ball speed on your golf shots with a better use of the energy that you put into the golf swing. Making sure your golf swing works with the driver and irons and in a way that allows you to hit the golf ball longer and straighter will allow you to find your lowest golf scores and lower your golf handicaps.

I have recently really learned this lesson big time. I usually swing “hard” with driver. I’m pulling on the handle for all I’m worth through the entire swing. One day I tried what I call a Fred Couples swing. Relaxed, fluid backswing relaxed downswing with a nice easy release. The Couples swing feels effortless but the club releases fully just at the ball and it just explodes off the face. You can hear the difference instantly. It has taken weeks to learn to slow down and let the club head catch up to my hands. It’s 10 to 15 yards longer with a 5 iron…

“Make me longer”
Made a substantial gain when I was able to differentiate between swinging harder vs swinging faster. I had an instructor liken it to having me throw my quickest punch versus my hardest punch at a boxing bag. It’s two entirely different punches where the fast punch your body is much more relaxed and ready to snap a quick punch and the hard punch you feel your body tense and clench to get ready to put your full force behind it. It’s a cool little physiological experiment to try yourselves.

“Make me longer” This makes so much sense!! Thank you for so many intuitive videos!! I’ve learned so much as a result! Can you speak to the squat during the downswing along with coming out of that squat in terms of power or power loss? That would also be a great video!

Mark, that was one of the most intelligent golf swing (instructional) videos I have ever watched. When I watch my swing on video, it looks like I am swinging in slow motion and when I try to swing out of my shoes, all I see is an unbalanced swing. Like you, I don't get more out of it, I just put more into it. I would love to get more efficient, but I also feel like I could add more speed throughout the swing to gain more speed as well.

Your older video to help slicing was amazing, and had instant results! It was the one where you said to 'cast' the driver to 2 o'clock. Massive thank you!!!

"Make me longer"
Just catching up to this video now, Mark. It makes sense to me. I've seen this myself with an inexpensive launch monitor. Working on identifying and fixing power leaks isn't easy but is rewarding and takes time. Enjoy watching your channel.

"Make me longer"

What an outstanding video! Absolutely loved the explanation and demonstrations. Have struggled for years thinking that swinging hard would produce more speed. Only recently have accepted that intent (swing hard) and outcome (swing fast) are not the same thing. It's this level of insight that puts Mark at the top of the list for must watch golf advice. Well done pro!

Fantastic video. No BS, just honest information trying to help people get the best out of golf.

BTW since when has Mark been hitting it that far?! Mighty impressive, I've clearly been gone for too long!

Best video you have ever done mark side from 2 hats 1sock. I didn't believe when I tried this until I got on a launch monitor. Completely changed how a apply force and my distance is through the roof.

Mark - this is an amazing video. You have been on a roll lately I must say. I am a high swing speed player (125mph average with Driver) but I can totally see the power leaks you are talking about. I know that, on ideal swings, I deliver roughly 10 degrees of dynamic loft (still a bit too low), launch at about 10 degrees, with a club path roughly 2° inside and a face/path of 1° closed. Those are "my" ideals. But, to your point, I know my struggles - I often have trouble over-rotating the clubface (face/path of 4+ degrees closed) resulting in lots of low pull-hooks. I know that when I really "go after" one, I tend to push forward hard off my back leg and often deliver even less loft (<8 degrees) and hit low bullet hooks. This comes from years as a competitive baseball player. This video (and technique work) shows how important it is to maintain technique and rotation rather than just brute force. Great insights.

Make Me Longer, said the Bishop to the actress! From my own experience, being built like a prop forward and hitting it like a primary school netball player, understanding torque from the ground up gave me what I think may be a Damacene Converstion. This lock down hasn't let me visually confirm this yet, as we can't get to the range or course, but whilst hitting balls into a net in the garden, and monitoring strike, visually and by feel; using my feet to create torque has transformed my stike quality and patterns. It's all in the twist!

Great video.
As many comments already, finding someone with the correct knowledge and ability to teach this seems to be the major issue.

"Make me longer" this concept is very valuable. I've been doing superspeed training and have definitely found that getting my positions/swing sequence in good order produce more speed than the swings when I just feel like I'm swinging as hard as I can. Great video, Mark! Really crushing the content lately!

This may be the most useful driver video on youtube in the last 12 months.

“Make me longer”
One issue I find locally is finding instructors that have enough knowledge about this sort thinking. Some have the technology, but no idea how to use it to it’s potential so can’t pass on that vital information. I am still searching cause I do want to improve and enjoy the game that we like playing. Keep it up Mark.
