Honestly, I find it comforting that, at least for Riley, the first emotion she ever felt was joy.

If you think about it, Sadness's true purpose was revealed in this very first scene:
Babies cry when they have to communicate a need, like being fed or changed. This is their way of telling the outside world of a problem they are having. If Riley was happy all the time as a baby, her parents wouldn't know when they would need to attend to her needs. The problem of Joy butting into Sadness's duty while Riley needs that feeling was apparent from the start.

People criticize the movie opening up on Joy, but you know it makes sense, the first thing you feel is the joy of being alive, to be here to start, start the Joy of life, and then you go into the hissy crying fit. sadness

When Baby was born, there was nothing. But then there was both Joy and Sadness. And as we grow into a toddler came Fear, Disgust, and Anger. And when we become a Teenager and emerging a purberty, came Anxiety, Envy, Embarassment, Ennui. As we become an Adult came Nostalgia, Pain, and Regret.

Literally my first emotion was calm, I was born like: "let's see, my mother's pregnancy with me has been 6 months, please put me in an incubator, now, I'll go to sleep"

5. The moment where Joy first got her name.

7. First time Sadness exists.
8. First time Joy and Sadness are ''Battling'' each other
9. First time Riley plays.
10. First time Fear exists (off screen) to keep Riley safe.
11. First time Disgust exists. (off screen)
12. First time Riley throws broccoli in her dad's face.
13. First time Anger exists. (off screen)
14. First time Riley rages.
15. First time Riley's dad gets her to eat.

I absolutely love this scene, but
A. Babies can experience emotion while still in the womb
B. If anything sadness would be first after birth as majority of babies come out crying
