A girl named Riley Andersen is born in Minnesota and within her mind, five personifications of her basic emotions — Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger — gradually come to life. As Riley grows up, her emotions influence her actions via a control console in her mind's Headquarters.

I love how even though the emotions don't age physically, they still age mentally like Riley does. When they see the dad do the airplane, they respond just like a toddler would in that moment. Love details like that.

I seriously LOVE the idea they present here as an infant’s mental control board as one single button. Their minds are so undeveloped and thus don’t have the capacity to do a whole lot other than laugh and cry to express their needs and emotions. Imo this is extremely helpful to keep in mind when dealing with a baby so that you don’t lose patience with them so quickly.

In the beginning there was nothing, nothing but emptiness, barrenness, the silence of an infinite darkness. There was no life then, only Love.

Then the Voice of Love spoke to the emptiness and said "live!" and life was.

Then the formless life began to take on substance and shape, and shape formed upon shape. And the separate pieces of the body, all part of the greater whole, all gathered together, and a beautiful, fragile child began to grow. This was the first month.


A thick blanket of skin stretched across the growing human. And the Voice of Love nurtured it, filling the newly developing organs with the lifeblood and making the heart to beat. Shape formed upon shape, the second month.


And then the face and extremities began to develop, and in the midst of them emerged muscles, reflexes and senses. And shape formed upon shape, and there was motion, the third month.

Nerves began to connect from the inside of the body to the outside and the brain began to develop the ability to feel. The bones began to harden and become solid, and a skeleton formed in order to hold the body together. Shape formed upon shape. This is what happened in the fourth month.

Then a sense of touch began to develop, and the Voice of Love gave the growing baby an awareness of the outside world and also of itself. The eyebrows also began to form and eyelids opened and closed over blind eyes. It was then that the sense of taste began to form upon the tongue as multitudes of taste buds took shape. This all happened in the fifth month.

The skin began to smooth out and layers of fat began to cover the dimensions of the baby. The eyes opened and saw for the first time. All of this happened in the six-month.


The brain of the baby began to grow and shape into a sophisticated thinking network. Vital connections were made and soon the mind of the child filled with dreams. Memories that are no more, ideas and thoughts born of a creative spirit, residue from the Voice of Love. And there were dreams, and there were ideas, a seventh month came to an end.


Now the infant was full of life, and the Voice of Love began to fill the baby’s lungs with the breath of life, which resides in all things. This is what happened in the eighth month.

Everything was good, everything was perfect. Innocent, pure and unspoiled.

Now the child was finally ready to leave the dark space that had been its home for the past nine months. Finally ready to go into the light.
And this was a blessed time. For the first time the small human being discovered family, community and identity.

And the Voice of Love looked at the child. The jewel in the hands of the woman called mother and a treasure in the eyes of the man called father.


And behold, the Voice of Love saw that it was very good.
