YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE | Little Nellie

Is this the ultimate Q gadget? James Bond uses a Wallis autogyro, nicknamed Little Nellie, in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967) in an attempt to locate Blofeld’s rocket base from the air. Real life Wing Commander Ken Wallis designed this unusual machine in the early 1960s. Unlike a helicopter, only the autogyro’s rear engine provides power during flight. Once airborne the top rotor spins freely due to the force of the air.

this movie seriously had the coolest Q gadgets. The Little Nellie, the rocket pistols, the cigarette gun, to name a few

RIP Sir Sean Connery. You set the bar high for Bonds.

What I find fantastic about the James Bond films were the fabulous gadgets that made us dream. Some of them have come true. 007 Live Forever!

What I loved about the helicopter dogfight scene, apart from being mostly shot with real aircrafts performing the stunts, was that the simply-constructed airframes of the Bell 47 and the Little Nellie fighting with close-range weapons reminded me of the early dogfights in World War One, yet the technologies were unmistakably at 1960s level. Such contrasting impression really clicks with me, It's like cyborgs dressed in period clothes performing medieval duels.

The WA-116 (Little Nelly) was on the cover of the June 1967 Popular Science magazine here in the states... Retired Royal Air Force Wing Commander Ken Wallis (the inventor and manufacturer) flew it himself for the movie. Awesome sequence and one of the cooler gadgets that Bond ever had!

When I think of James Bond I think of *THIS* scene. They knew this scene was so good that it warranted the James Bond theme. Its got the definitive James Bond (RIP Sean Connery) using an awesome gadget to fight against villains in an exotic location. You also have Q and a beautiful woman.

I don't care what people say, but You Only Live Twice is my most favourite of all of Connery's Bond films, and as a Japanophile, I love the fact that it takes place in Japan!

“Hello Base One…there’s nothing here but old volcanoes”.

Tanaka: “Ok, thanks…I’ll let the cartographers know”.

You know, if they'd had the sense to just leave Bond alone, he might have flown back to base with the idea that he was barking up the wrong tree, that the freighter had off-loaded it's cargo somewhere else. Attacking him just draws more attention to the island. Even if he was shot down, it would mean someone would follow up on his death.

This was awesome to see on the big screen within a packed theater.

Connery was really pissed off with Bond by this stage, BUT later on he embraced the fact that it would stay with him for life...
God bless you Sean..and keep an eye on Roger

If I could go back in time, the 60s is when I'd go. The coolest time for movies and music. It was a great era to grow up in.

That song should be played during action scenes in more Bond films. It is just SO perfect. You cannot possibly over-use it.

This is a great sequence that I've always enjoyed. But I just realized that if the bad guys hadn't attacked Bond then he never would have known that the base was there! I mean what's the point of having such a perfectly camouflaged volcano hideout if you're going to give away your position by attacking? They should have just let him go by, lol! But of course then we wouldn't
have gotten such an exciting sequence.

after seeing this as a 13 year old kid in 1967, I dreamed and dreamed of ultimately owning a autogyro like Little Nellie..i remember dreaming how I would fly it to high school.. looking at it now, , man, does that look awfully dangerous

I loved this scene and the Thunderball underwater fight scene the most when I saw these movies in the 1960s as a grade school boy.
