String Theory by Jimmy Brown
SWEET SORROW
In the previous two lessons, Jimmy Brown looked at celebrated examples of musically effective ways in which songwriters, when composing in a major key, have borrowed chords, specifically triads, that are generated from its parallel natural minor or har- monic minor key and scale. In this lesson, Jimmy cites equally famous ways in which musicians such as The Beatles, Journey, and Derek and the Dominoes have expanded upon this chord-borrowing concept.

Love Jimmy Brown’s lessons!!! My favorite series of lessons that really changed my chord choices and types was a few years ago that he titled “Madd Men” (I think that was the title anyway.) He really stretched that “add” series out for quite a while and it got better and better as it went along!!! Then he hit the flatted 5ths and versions using that. I also love how he shows these lessons applied in famous hit songs everyone knows. Thank you Jimmy and Guitar World!!!

In Brazil, we call this harmonic technique "empréstimo modal".
