The Mandela effect is a social phenomenon that occurs when a large group of people misremember a specific detail about a person, place, or event. The term was coined by paranormal researcher Fiona Broome in 2010 after she discovered that many people shared her false memory that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s. In reality, Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and became South Africa's first president in 1994
