"I don't imagine the answer is on those second rate shoes, Clarice." I love that line.

Jodie Foster plays clarice like a chess player, every move she made as an actor is so precise, detailed, and brilliant. No wonder she is one of the cinema's finest actresses and also it's most intelligent.

Out of all the meetings, this one was my favorite

4:28 'No he was a very decent man. Quis pro quo Doctor!' Brilliant move, perfect timing from Clarice: she knows she has the upper hand and Lecter is eager to know more, so she strikes.

Lecter was probably suspecting that the deal was fake, but notice how he becomes more interested in it when she mentions the terns. Jack Crawford earlier stated that if he had sent her with a full agenda, Lecter would’ve known immediately. Here however he seems to show more interest when he’s told he’ll be able to watch birds. Why? Here’s why:
-When they first met, he told her “Fly back to school, little Starling. Fly, fly, fly, fly, fly!”
-In the “Your Self” storage facility, we see a big statue of the American bald eagle.
-And now this.
This guy clearly has a fascination for birds, more specifically things that fly.
I might be wrong or reading too much into it, but I think that was a subtle and clever way to show us how much he craves freedom internally: he wants to be like the birds, being able to fly around freely and eat all he wants. This is some high-level writing right here! 👏

As she describes the death of her mother and father Lecter's face shows a moment of pain, of compassion. Very subtle, hardly noticeable. Years ago it hit me subliminally. Seeing this clip verifies my initial reaction. He does the same things when Starling reveals the harrowing story of saving a terrified lamb. Inside that monster is a real human being.

4:36 One of the greatest ever shots in film.

This scene, as I've noted previously, is a master class in acting. One of playwright Anton Chekhov's quotes is this: “When a person expends the least possible amount of energy on a certain act, that is grace.” This scene epitomizes Chekhov's advice on grace. Both Hopkins and Foster move so sparingly through this entire scene that it's daunting and their minimal movements only intensify the scene itself. Notice that when Lechter asks Clarice, "So tell me about Miss West Virginia. Was she a large girl?" All Foster does at this moment is to learn forward slightly towards Lechter--waiting--and then responding with a simple "yes." Similarly, when Clarice relates the story of her parents' deaths, Lechter does nothing but close his eyes so slowly that if we blink, we can miss it. This scene is breathtaking, and both Hopkins and Foster shine throughout.

I find it very interesting that their first meeting is the only time Hannibal refered to Clarice as "Agent Starling". After that he always only called her Clarice, and he says her name alot. During their last meeting he says her name 14 times. I wander if that's a testament to how close the two became and how they built this relationship of mutual respect and admiration.

One of my favorite sequences in not just this movie but any movie starts at 4:35 when Lecter walks up to the glass. Love the way they shot the conversation with Lecter's reflection in the glass then the switch to a closeup of Chilton, and how Lecter's dialogue transitions into being more of a voiceover as Chilton listens on the tape recorder. Combined with the acting and score in the background, it's like a masterpiece within a masterpiece.

I love the shot of Lecters face reflected on the glass and Clarice’s eyes getting bigger and understanding

Does it make me a psychopath that I find Dr Lecter incredibly charming in this scene? Especially the look of sympathy when he hears about Starling's father's death. No one else in the movie seems to be interested in her personal struggles. They just desire her body.

This scene fascinates me so much because this is the only time Hannibal showed empathy, which his very very rare for true psychopaths to show, it showed that she gained his trust and he gained hers, a truly beautiful moment for someone so cold to finally show emotion and remorse.

That look that starts at 0:12 gives me goosebumps in every time. So evil but interested look. Hopkins made his homework about Lecter more better than perfectly.

we watched this in my contract law class. Made for a very interesting discussion on whether or not this quid-pro-quo was a binding agreement.
