Winter: My Favorite Seeds to Sow (& More)

I'm sowing some more seeds to keep us in harvests over the winter period. I'm sowing some of my favourite winter crops and a few new ones I haven't tried before. So join me, for a cup of tea and some chat in the greenhouse while we sow seeds for autumn and winter growing.

Fast becoming my favourite channel.

I'm new to gardening. I used to avoid it unless I was working with the pond.
Just bought a polycarbonate greenhouse 8 x 12ft, after having a couple of cheap polyurethane things. Not built it yet.
Desperately waiting for my toms and chillies to ripen (sunny Manchester).

Trying to plan staging and layout. I've bought a tool station/work bench, as an alternative potting bench.

I have a worm composter that is buzzing along merrily.
Built my own cheap irrigation system.

Must be something to do with hitting my mid 50's, and impending retirement.

I totally agree, you suddenly remember its not just your plants who benefit from being protected from the weather. It's warm enough to enjoy that small level of protection before it's too cold to want to be out there. My hands get far to muddy to hold a mug of tea. I have planted some chard and lettuce in my own greenhouse. Although, my biggest winter success has to be curly parsley, which I grew outside under cover. It bushed out and I got 8 months of continual harvest, this is in Yorkshire, UK. I can only aspire to have a clean a greenhouse as yours.

Totally agree with the lovely sound of rain when I'm in my greenhouse...☺ I've started my winter lettuces and onions that will hopefully grow happily in the greenhouse this fall and winter. I started them kind of late last year. So I'm hoping by getting them sown in late August/1st wk of Sept (as you recommended 👍🏻), they'll have more time to grow before the cold temps descend upon us. Thanks for the ideas for other winter greens to try.

The joy of being in a greenhouse on a rainy day.... unless it's a home made greenhouse with random leaks in the roof ;) Actually it's still nice because there are some nice spots and it's always a touch warmer than outside :D My peppers/capsicum are coming along nicely now so hopefully I can get a good crop this year :D I think I'm slowly getting better at sowing my seeds ahead of planting them out (ie getting a head start because of the benefit of the greenhouse, letting them grow strong then planting out).

Living in the extreme SE of UK, I can be fairly sure of a mild winter, often no minus numbers. Very different to Scotland and your growing conditions. My garden is still in full harvest mode, so initially I was a little taken a back at your emptiness!
Agree on the winter sowing. I have lettuces, chicory and endive all ready to jump into the beds.
Love winter spinach too.
