*1.18 Mining Q&A* *Q* : Is this info still accurate? *A* : Yes, except Diamonds now spawn about 2x more frequently, copper generates 16 blocks higher and lower and gold generates more below y: -48 than it did, however other than that everything else is the same and the levels that you mine at are the same. *Q* : Does this guide apply for Java and Bedrock Edition? *A* : Yes this guide is for both versions. *Q* : Will this info become outdated? *A* : No, other than the changes listen on the first question this Information should not change (if it does I will pin a comment mentioning it) *Q* : Strip Mining or Caving? *A* : Strip Mining is safer and you get deepslate but its slower and wears out your tools faster, Caving is Faster but is more dangerous and requires large caves at the right y level. *Q* : How do I know if I am on 1.18? *A* : If you can mine below y0 and you have crazy caves then you are on 1.18 .

I honestly dislike the change that makes it so ores do not get as much air exposure. One of the goals of 1.18 is to make players explore caves more and to discourage strip mining, this snapshot is very counterproductive in terms of meeting that goal. What I would like to see Mojang do is start the deep slate layer with low air exposure ores, and as the caves get deeper and more dangerous (i.e. The Deep Dark) the air exposure of ores increases. Thank you so much for making this video, in the meantime this advice will be super helpful!

"Level 14 is the best layer for Iron."
Oh, this update is gonna take some getting used to. 😂

*Diamonds are finally easier to find, but coal coal, though, is kind of hard to find.*

I would highly recommend that if you are caving, that you take potions of night vision with you so you can see all over the caves for ores, and don’t have to waste time with torches

If you don't like strip mining and prefer caving, I recommend finding an aquifer or a flooded cave. Since water is not air you get the same amount of it spawning if you were strip mining without mining any blocks. I have found good quantities of ores this way. Just don't drown.

A few things to note:
- The best way to get copper and iron is actually through giant ore veins. Giant copper veins generate above y=0 and are basically long, winding strips of copper mixed with granite. Giant iron veins generate below y=0 and are the same but mixed with tuff.
- If you find a really big cave, it will probably be better than strip mining because the insane number of exposed blocks will counter the reduced air exposure.
- The best way to get coal and emeralds is just to mine high up in a mountain biome.

For me, I prefer y = -54 for diamonds and redstone, because that's the new standard level of lava lakes. At y = -57, you'll occasionally dig into the side of a lava lake, which is really annoying. At y = -54, you'll always be above them, so you can easily bridge across any you come across

Something I have found since 1.18 was released has been how many more diamonds you can find in underground aquifers than in the open-air caves. The reduced air exposure has no effect when the ores are not *technically* surrounded by air. Of course, this method isn't all that viable until you have some enchanted armor at least but from my experience it is super lucrative.

Good video, thanks for your amazing research!

Here's a small 1.18 mining start I came up with (share your ones too, I'm very intrested in it):

0. Get some wood (10 logs will be enough), maybe some food (or else your only food source will be zombies lol) and a few stone pickaxes.

1. Mine to somewhere around The Copper Level (02:36) and find about half a stack of coal.

2. Mine to The Iron Level (04:33) and start strip mining until you found some iron.
Be VERY careful when exploring large caves!
Get as many iron as you need (in my case, it was 40 -- full armor + 3 pickaxes + sword + shovel + bucket + shield)

3. Mine to The Diamond Level (07:05) and start strip mining until you get 8+ diamonds. Also mine some lapis, 1-2 stacks
Craft 2 or more diamond pickaxes and save 2 diamonds for the enchanting table (also mine 4 obsidian for it)

4. Go back to surface (finally!), farm cows and sugar cane (you probably have some bones from caves exploration; if not, just farm some skeletons at night) to craft bookshelves and enchanting table.
After getting 7-10 bookshelves try to enchant one diamond pickaxe to Fortune, and all other pickaxes to Efficiensy and Durability (it'll take you a while but it totally worth it)

5. Go back to The Diamond Level and... you know what to do. Use the Fortune diamond pick to mine ores, and all other pickaxes to mine stone and deepslate. Continue until you get as many diamonds as you need

6. PROFIT! I used this technique on 21w43a and gained about a stack of diamonds in 9 hours

When accounting for the increase in time spent on deepslate, we also need to account for the abundance of tuft deeper down, which is faster to mine than stone. At 57 I seem to be getting diamonds just as quickly as I did before the update.

I kinda like that each ore has its own layer. Sometimes you're just short on really only 1 type of ore.

A fun fact about the split in the caves & cliffs update; because the features were split between 1.17 and 1.18, there are two ore blocks that are now entirely exclusive to 1.17 worlds: deepslate coal and deepslate emerald

No wonder I can't find my precious coal and iron like I used to. Thanks for this guide! I'll use this for sure.

I've heard some concerns from some people about the ability to clear out the deepslate quickly. Maybe the Warden could drop something that could be combined with a beacon to produce an improved beacon of some sort that would allow for instant-mining of deepslate (would probably require another layer of beacon, meaning a ton more ore blocks).

Or they could add a "Deep Miner" enchantment that's similar to efficiency, but more effective on tougher blocks.

I love how there are multiple optimal layers for mining now! Not as many pesky tunnel mazes in your servers, and makes your mines a lot more exciting as there are multiple levels to chose from.

that is a lot of time saved, ty so much. i went caving earlier and was bombarded by zombie and skeletons, i managed to find 4 veins of 1 diamond after 1 hour and then died and my stuff despawned... diamonds definetely are way harder to get by, especially when you are starting out and not geared properly. and not having coal at the lower levels is very painful when you cant make torches with these huge caves. Anyways, thx for the video

The way I played is just go into a cave and collect what ores I find. This new update has made mining a lot more enjoyable
