I saw Pink Floyd many times in the 70's, including Carnegie Hall debut of Dark Side of the Moon (Eclipse). I interviewed them twice (I was a music journalist at the time). With Waters they were dragged into his dour, cynical world view and went along with his dark personality. Without him they were much nicer people. He needed them more than they needed him and they broke up at the right time. His stuff, without Gilmour's vocal and guitar, with Wright's ethereal keys and vocals and even without Nick Mason's pedantic drumming was justly sent to the bargain bins. THEY SOLD MILLIONS OF RECORDS AFTER HE LEFT AND CREATED work that while a little less magical than peak Floyd still maintained their standards, especially Division Bell which is the story of their titanic battle with Waters. Thank God that you live in an age that could produce such awesome music. Vernon Gibbs

I always interpret the instrumental bit as a story. Here's how:

06:28 to 11:33 - A normal life.
11:38 to 14:35 - Normal life turns chaotic. You wake up and find yourself in a dark 'jungle' of chaos.
14:40 to 16:28 - A ray of hope (happiness) appears in the form of the sun.
16:29 to 17:52 - A fighting spirit awakens as you run towards the sun.
17:53 to 18:22 - You see the exit and run towards it.
18:23 to 18:50 - You emerge out of the forest.
21:00 to ending - Looks back and takes one last look at the chaos, look up at the shining sun, and walk forth.

What about you guys? Let me know your interpretations. :)

Two bands tower above every other: Pink Floyd and King Crimson. All else comes second and below. I don't care what others say, this is an almost objective fact! The combination of great musicianship and visionary music is second to none!!!!

7 years since Rick passed away, and this performance is a fitting example of his contribution to Pink Floyd.
In fact, I think this song can be considered one of the band's major achievements; a testament to what they could do together, as a whole. So many nuances and improvisation possibilities...

The solo that starts at 4:25 and ends at 5:35 is... I have no words. I've heard a lot of David Gilmour-solos. Comfortably Numb, Shine on, the solo in Wish you were here, On the turning away, Have a cigar, High Hopes, Coming back to life, Great Day for freedom... On an island, Where w start... All of his solos actually, but this one. My jaw drops, fucking tears in my eyes... Amazing

The "call and response" bit between David on the guitar and Rick on the Farfisa moves me to tears.

Rick Wright's last hurrah and he's playing the best he ever played!
