Buried inside Donald Trump’s executive order on China tariffs is one line that will disrupt the business models of companies like Shein and Temu. The de minimis exemption is part of why these products are so cheap — and without this exemption, your Temu orders will cost you more money. #News #Trump #Technology

How do you think this change will curb overconsumption?

People need to stop buying junk. Spend your money on durable goods.

Most of the cheap stuff(fast fashion, plastic goods, cheap electronics, etc) ends up in large dumps. This is actually better for the environment. Less wastage. Less consumption. Less garbage. Less energy usage.

As someone in Canada who sells to the USA on eBay it's been so hard to keep up with the trade rules. They seem to radically change from day to day. This video talks about stuff that most channels seem to have avoided. Thank you!

The majority of the electorate voted for this president who promised to raise tariffs. So the voters are getting what they voted for. No reason for them to be dissatisfied.

All those people saying stop buying cheap stuff is so tone deaf, not everyone is financially equal. It’s like saying why are you homeless just buy a home.

It's mostly trash with no quality whatsoever that gets into the trashcan really fast. This is surely not Trump's concern, but if it stops this nonsense, then it's a welcome measure. These stupid companies should also be taxed for part of the recycling process.

This was one of the first things I thought about when it was first announced. On the bright side, maybe there will be less waste and reduce needless consumerism….?

Until 2021 the EU had a comparable duty free limit at around 22 euros but it has been axed since. 800$ was an exceptionally high limit.

Trying to change people's habits is hard, especially when they are cheap and affordable.

In India we have tremendous paperwork and tariffs for imported goods. These kinds of red tape and tariffs will only make consumers suffer.

As a chinese immigrant, I see how wasteful Americans spend their mo ney which is why Americans constantly complains about being broke. Americans are so brainwashed by consumerism that they are their own worst enemy. from the individuals to the federal government. The American spending habits is so bad that even if everyone is paid millions of dollars, they will end up spending more than they make still. Instead, please look to your asian american friends and see how we are able to always save >20% and invest that money to make even more money. Think long term, have some slef discipline.

We can't waste world's resources in the name of cheap joy.

I hate chinese stores, by my wife loves them because everything is cheap and disposable. But that's the very problem. What's the point of it being cheap if it'll only last a week?

Hope this helps reducing waste. I bought a Huawei phone back in 2017 and almost 10 years after I'm still using the cable that came with it. Chinese can build and do build great products. But Cheap low quality stuff has to stop somehow.

I think this will help minimize people spending recklessly and buying non essentials that are wasteful.People complain about medication co pays but yet will shop like a billionaire on Temu. Our landfill is overfilled with low dollar items. So yeah maybe it will also have a positive impact too.

Under 800$ you don’t pay taxes? Wow.. In Brazil if it’s over 50$ you have to pay up to 100% in taxes. So if the thing you’re buying costs 80$, you’ll have to pay 70$ for the thing and 80$ for the government. Don’t forget the fact that our currency is 5, 77x cheaper than dollar so 140$ becomes R$ 920. Jesus.. Gotta figure a way to get paid in dollar.
