AI Hype: Our Natural Gullibility Explained. This is part 2 of my interview with Carl from @InternetOfBugs. It turns out the human brain is naturally hard-wired to projecting human-like qualities onto non-human things such as animals, machines, and even software. This natural gullibility is nothing new and goes back centuries.

As a programmer, trying to get AI to do anything complex has been a nightmare. At best it's a faster Google search for those simple things you've forgotten.

I have a feeling that typical tech startup nowdays have more psychologists on their team than actual engineers

AI is just modern day gold rush and Nvidia is intelligent to sell jeans and shovels.

There is no way this ends well. This is literally a bubble from nothing.

Good stuff! The one thing AI will be good at is destroying the Internet. It's going to be just a bunch of AI posted garbage, one big bot echo chamber.

I often joke that the I in LLM stands for Intelligence

Was part of the tech boom 2000 and call bullshit on AI, what a marketing spin

I worked in the bay area for 10 years. Solar, not software, but the complete fraud BS con artists in startups (which I reviewed for investment on behalf of a large corp) was shocking. These tools have no shame.

Our brains also have the ability to selectively look for information that agrees with our preconceptions and ignore anything that disagrees with it.

All these Big Tech companies that are heavily invested in artificial intelligence obviously need to keep the hype alive to ensure their stock prices stay high and investors don't start to panic like fleeing mice, especially since there are already signs that the bubble may burst

AI may be able to replace entry level positions for programers and lawyers etc but never able to compete with the ability of a experienced professional. It will be the height of short sightedness to eliminate junior positions to save money then wonder, 10 years later, where all the senior experts are.

I'm not an expert, but I have felt like the LLMs are basically just pattern recognition programs. It feels in the areas where I have seen it really used that it will self limit: as more people use it the "data" fed into it will become more and more AI generated thereby creating less and less diversity in responses (I mostly have seen it used by photographers to make art from their photos and 3d artists.)

‘Conscious AI’ is a huge ontological misunderstanding. LLMs are exclusively dealing with bits and bytes, symbols and words, but have no access to the gigantic experience behind these words. Just try: ‘What a beautiful sunset’. First stripped of all human experience and understanding, just the words describing a situation. Then activate your human understanding and experience and these words become so much more than just words. It is ridiculous to expect this from silicon chips. A great book to read more about this is Irreducible’ from Federico Faggin, the father of the modern microcomputer and an early AI pioneer.

Awesome series. This is why i love your topics and guests. I am a CS systems engineer and this is spot on.

As far as AI induced layoffs, tech companies will bring their people back at reduced salaries. This will further "Juice" their position in the eyes of investors.

"AI"(can't stand the term) taking advantage of humans anthropomorphising reminds me of Facebook taking advantage of natural neurochemical actions in the form of dopamine "hits" with the "like" button. I am sure the "AI" companies know what they are doing just like Facebook knew.

Maybe I'm immune to the Eliza effect. I don't personalize machines, I think chat bots are full of shit and stupid. I don't even think some people are Real, their just too ridiculous. 😂
