Tony Jeffries shares the pros and cons of hitting the heavy bag or punching bag for boxing. I was surprised that Sugar Ray Leonard, one of the best boxers of all time didn't hit the heavy bag when he was training. One of the cons of hitting the heavy bag is we are developing bad form and techniques in our boxing training.

The heavy bag is your best friend when you don't have a partner. For me it was my best friend during the pandemic and the lockdown. Great video there.

I'm probably around 12 years in a row on the heavy bag...and I mean DAILY...do not miss a day; holidays, birthdays, even sub-zero freezing days in my garage. Regardless, I'm hitting that bag. It's the one and only exercise I truly love. Of course, over the years, as I've improved, I've added a water bag at head level, and two double end bags...along with the good ole ground and pound bag for when things hit the floor.
LOVE BOXING...and love your videos, Tony!

I concur. The heavy bag is the number one tool to get in super shape! I am 40 and only started about 5 years ago. Passion came out of nowhere. I am never bored on the bag and hit it about 4 to 5 times a week. I love to spare as well and I did try to join a boxing gym but I must say I no longer have the energy to get going after work. So my workouts are in the morning or during lunch time. Almost every day. Easy and most fun way to get a great workout in 20 to 30 minutes. Do it.

I use a 45kg bag, with a pulley spring, chain and rope. The system let's me set it up at all kinds of different heights, and is secured with a cleat. The pulley's let me do all kinds of stuff with the attached rope as well. Love you, coach!

I just shadowbox cause my living quarters are too limited for hanging a heavy bag. I jump rope in my kitchen for a couple hours. I have a bosu ball and a slam ball, ab workouts, pullups, chinups, pushups. It's the best I can do atm. If I ever get a better home, I'll add a bag and a fixed pullup bar.

I don’t even wait for the middle to “LIKE” the video. When Tony puts up a video, I like it right away.

Great for conditioning shins too. Kick the bottom of a heavy bag with both shins regularly and they deaden the nerves

Hitting the heavy bag strengthens the hands, wrists, elbow and shoulders and associated tissues specific to boxing technique. Many lift weights to increase muscle mass and strength to increase punch power but the lifting technique does not develop muscle nor punch power in the same way as punching a heavy bag. This is the principle of specificity. Better to punch a heavier and heavier bag to increase muscle mass, strength and punch power. The heavy bag is just another type of weight that provides resistance which you overcome by punching it (rather than lifting it). It's the same principle used in weight training only it's more specific to boxing.

Double end bag and teardrop/uppercut bags are my favourite.
Due to injury I prefer using an aqua bag now.
To stop getting bored from monotonous repetition you need to be creative and mix up how you train on the bag.
For example implement movement, changing levels, tempo, power. Add defence in between shots and combo’s.
Not only will it make training more enjoyable, it will consistently improve your skills.

Heavy bag isn't boring for me. It's the only cardio I actually enjoy. Most of the other stuff is mind numbingly dull while the heavy bag has my mind engaged working on technique, speed, power, combinations, and even defense.

The heavy bag is a great addition to any boxing or martial arts training program, the benefits are much more than the disadvantages as long as it's part of the training with All the other training methods included.🥊

Sugar Ray Leonard, the one and only! Great advice, eliminating bad habits is even more difficult than learning from zero in all sports and complex activities. Regards!
