The hinderances and pains of the suit ensured Vaders survival against his most dangerous foe, Anakin Skywalker.

I feel like Paplpatine, had Anakin not lost to Obi Wan, would be content with Vader trying to overthrow him as a way of testing his strength and loyalty to the Sith tradition. If Vader won, Palpatine would transfer his force essence into a younger body and analyze his faults in the battle, improve, and eventually attempt to overthrow Vader.

I believe if Vader did get a new suit not only would he be more powerful than in his regular suit but I believe he still would have held back against Luke in Return of the Jedi. Also Anakin might have also still lived afterwards too so he could help train Luke in the ways of the Jedi.

While the old suit added to the pain and suffering Vader dealt with on a daily basis, it should be noted that the cause of Vader's suffering and pain was his failure to save both his mother and his wife. Those are emotions that will stay with Vader for his entire life, and should be more than sufficient to fuel his anger and dark side powers. But of course Vader wants to be all powerful, so maybe it is like Stupendous says, keeping the old suit would make him much stronger in the dark side of the force than an new and improved suit.

They need to do a what if series for Star Wars. I would love to see alternatives.

I think Vader would have been an absolute terror to anybody with a new suit. With that made him physically stronger, gave him his mobility back and resistant to electricity. He would destroy Sidious. I think then he would focus on his losses and how no matter what he did he will never be who he once was. His physical pain wasn’t even half of what pushed him so far into the dark

Luke's very presence weakened Vader, in my view. He could no longer fully envelope himself in hate and suffering when faced with such a reminder of his past, of Padme, and of who he really is. In Luke he would CONSTANTLY see Padme, and also his younger, more innocent self, and what's more, Luke didn't hate him - he had FAITH in him and drew out the light side in him more and more the more they interacted. "There's good in you - I can feel it." - Luke himself could feel that change. And THAT is what made Vader weaker around Luke than ever before - because he couldn't fully be suffering when he was proud of his son or secretly slightly happy that Leia, too, survived. He couldn't give his whole being to the dark side anymore. So Luke simply being his son and being there was an additional factor that weakened him which is perhaps why Luke fares better against him later on than the first time - it's not so much that Luke got stronger as it is that Anakin was awakening and Vader was dying - and Anakin didn't fully WANT to kill his son.

I read the books back in the 80's, was something like this: "... and after so many years vader and the suit were already 1, were metal and flesh were fussed as blood vein and circuits. the only parts you could separate were the cape and other minor part, anything else could compromise and rapidly decay his zombie body, in the end that armor was his link to this realm and the source of his pain but a reminder that he was still alive."

There's a subjective point that was NOT touched on in the video: guilt and self-punishment. Vader was haunted by guilt. Padme, his mother, the younglings, the destruction of Alderaan, etc. His own self-loathing undoubtedly played a considerable part in the desire to endure constant pain for the rest of his life.

I believe he chose to remain in that painful suit because on some level he felt he deserved it. He hated himself for losing Padme. I think if he was more like the other Sith, he would have risked dying to get an upgraded suit. Someone who truly craves power would rather die than be an eternal lap dog for someone else the way Vader was. I think if Vader had constructed a new suit that gave him great mobility, and was resistant to force lightning, he'd have been able to kill the Emperor. I think something that would have been really interesting is with a new suit that was insolated against Force Lightning, he could have developed robotic arms, and hands that could channel it from his upper arms so that he could develop the use of it.

Obi wan is no one? He beat general grevious who is trained to kill his kind. He beat Anakin and maul.
Funny he can kill those who are trained to kill jedi

I think even if he had a new suit he might be suffering less but you don't forget suffering, i don't think a new suit would have weakened his connection to the darkside, just knowing palpatine handicapped him on purpose in the first place would be rage fuel for vader

Ever since I saw Mother Talzan upgrade Darth Maul by essentially ripping out his insanity, restoring the top half of his body to perfect health, and giving him powerful cybernetic legs, I've often wondered how Vader would have turned out if the same happened to him. He would have had better cybernetic arms and legs, more potential in the Force due him having more flesh, and more mobility. I don't know if he would have been better off without the suffering to fuel his power in the Dark Side, but maybe he still could have overcome many of the weaknesses he had as Anakin by learning from his defeat against Obi-Wan.

I also don't think he would have been as intimidating without the suit, unless Talzan made him look like he does in the picture at 5:07 in this video. He still could have worn armour obviously, but it wouldn't have been the same without the sound of breathing that sent chills down everyone's spines. All and all, I think that this Vader would have been powerful enough to kill Sidious as well as the Rebels' hope for a free galaxy. As for whether or not he'd be able to pull it off, I can't say for certain. It all would depend on whether or not he actually learned anything after losing to Obi-Wan.

Fear impared Vader, from the start of his journey as Jedi, not his suit.

I feel like he kept the old suit as a way to punish himself more.. Maybe it also helped to insulate him from the world a bit, which he may have grown to prefer. He viewed himself as a monster and the suit helped him embody that role and lent a presence.. Just hearing his clomping footsteps would instill fear. Iconic

Clearly, he made the correct choice. He was able to kill the Emperor and bring balance to the force. Had he survived the upgrade, the Emperor may have been unable to trust him. The final battle would have been very different.

I know he was vastly powerful in the Dark side, but it's still impressive how well Vader does everything from combat to influence despite these suits shortcomings

Palpatine: I got you a new suit.
Vader: I cannot wear this suit. It would be a huge retcon.
Palpatine: The hell is a retcon?
Vader: I mean, err, umm, I might die in the process.
