Retired 20-year disabled vet here. Years ago after I retired I had applied for a federal ROTC armorer position at the local university. I had the 10-point preference and years of armory experience using the same weapons kept in the university armory. They ended up giving the job to some kid who already worked there who had no military or armory experience. I made an official complaint as a violation of the hiring preference law and the response I received was that basically they could hire whoever they wanted, regardless of the 10-point preference or experience.

Also check your State Agencies. California for instance applies this rule for Veterans. You must be certified as a Veteran by filing out the State Veterans Form. California's Policy - If you are currently competing in a State civil service examination for which Veterans’ Preference will be granted, you will automatically be added to the top rank, provided your application for Veterans’ Preference is approved before the eligible record is created. If you were previously successful in a State civil service exam for which Veterans’ Preference was granted, you must provide a copy of your approval letter to the testing office that administered the examination in order to request that your preference be applied.

I APPLIED off the dot GOV website 10% preference for a job on a military base in Japan. I was told I dont qualify because I dont live near the base. Total and complete B.S I think the entire hiring preference thing is smoke and mirrors. Jay you rock thank you for all the information you share
