Why Star Wars: Episode I Racer STILL RULES in 2022 (Review)

Now THIS is pod racing! What's better than flying around in sci fi environments, pushing 1,000 MPH while goofy characters yell at you? Not much really.

N64 footage was captured through an N64, PC footage was captured from my gaming PC.

Hey guys, as always thanks for watching! I appreciate it.

Let me know if you'd like to see a review of the sequel, Star Wars Racer Revenge and don't forget to let me know what your favorite racing game is in the comments!

This game was very hard at the end, as a child. I think that's the market. I beat it in 2 days the other day, but I remember the short cuts and I'm way older. This is one of my favorite racing games.

Ah, one of the most fun racer games ever made IMO! Can you imagine if they made a modern Podracer game with today’s hardware?

Great presentation and production value in this review; I didn't expect much from a small channel but was pleasantly surprised. Glad I clicked after seeing you in my YT recommendations for a few weeks!

My only experience with this one when I was a kid was the arcade version. The one where they had Anakin's pod with individually controllable thrusters for each arm. Picked up the remaster on switch and it really has stood the test of time. It's fast and satisfying

One of my first games on N64. loved this game.
3:20 This is the exact reason i couldnt progress the game.

The music kicks in on the final lap on the N64. Also there noticeable differences in the engine sounds, but in the movie the pods are flying past the camera in quick succession. Then you cut to a clip of your pod driving with a fixed camera a set distance from the pod, with no one else passing you, so of course it's just one continuous sound.

But I think Episode I Racer might be my favorite racing game. Gran Turismo 3, Forza Motorsport 4, Assetto Corsa, and Dirt Rally 1/2, and Wipeout are also among my favorites. Hard to pick a #1.

OBSESSED with this game as a kid.

the only reason i never beat it was becasue i had no idea how to use boost lol i remember hitting one button on my keyboard and i immediately went faster. i was like "HOW DID I DO THAT?! I COULDVE DONE THAT THIS WHOLE TIME?!?!" was gettign my butt kicked

I forget, I think it is the second invitational that takes place on an aerial track with multiple floors.

It was significantly harder with all the higher end parts because if you fell off the upper track you had to go the long way. The other racers had no difficulty sticking to that upper level. Downgrading to lower end parts makes the track easier while the other racers are downgraded accordingly. It would make sense why even without upgrades the difficulty does not fluctuate.

The arcade version of this was really fun

"Fan opinion on TPM is mixed even to this day"
Yes, but it has shifted more towards "positive but not perfect" over time. Part of the reason why the initial response to TPM was far more negative than current sentiments was because the movie got absolutely panned by a number of high-profile film critics, and unfortunately a lot of people take the word of film critics as law. Personally, I find that TPM has a lot of good individual scenes and some amazing visuals and sound design that hold up even to this day, and I do like how it sets the stage for the rest of the series, but I also feel like it drags on too long and that a political drama might have not been the best fit for a sci-fi series previously known for being heavily influenced by war movies.

Assetto Corsa has become my favorite racing game of all time with all the mods and possibility of that game and throw in online it is amazing!! But yeah would love to see you review the sequel of the game. Also Yeah what misfit said you should do the midnight club series in the same vain you did the Viewtiful Joe games!

Ok, to address the difficulty complaints, in free play mode you can bump up the speed of rival racers.

Great review. This game is such a classic. Your video brought me back some great memories. Earned yourself another sub. Keep up the great work. Look forward to the next review.

Fantastic video as usual, I think you pace your videos perfectly. And I would love to see you cover Star Wars Racer Revenge, I had no idea that game existed so I'd love to know your thoughts on it. I do own Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racer for the N64, but those frames just made it hard for me to get into it, as someone who didn't grow up with the game.

My favorite racer is probably F-Zero GX, I got it earlier this year and I don't think I've ever had so much fun with a racing game, as much as it destroys me haha.

Midnight Club series was the best street racing game series.

Playing the game without upgrades is actually a pretty fun challenge, really requires the player to race well and boost as best as possible. Finished it a few weeks ago on the N64 (well, emulated... mine doesn't boot anymore), I have to say the absurd input lag from that version makes things a bit unfair though.

I don't think the difficulty was an issue, in fact I think they nailed it.

It is however a product of its time and target audience.

Not only were a lot of games (not all) during the 90s and early 00s focused more on getting high scores rather than the challenge of beating them. But the game was definitely tuned for kids. I remember it taking a year for my brother and I to beat this game when we were kids.

Once it was on steam I picked it up again and beat it in a single sitting lol.

Nintendo actually did this a lot. It was a way to make the games challenging to all levels of players.

I felt accomplished finishing the easy route on start fox 64. But always loved watching my cousin killing everything and some how never even losing a wing let alone die.

Grew up with this game, and still love it. Though I'm way better at it as an adult lol. It's incredibly short and an easy platinum on PS5, but still incredibly fun.

My favourite racing game? This. For sure. But honestly, I'm not a fan of the genre. This was the only racing game ever that I truly enjoyed.
