Out of the Tar Pit came out 14 years ago and it was a big influence on my thinking. I've thought a lot about it and I want to share some extensions and refinements of the ideas in the paper. If a quantity is doubling in size in each time period, it's growth is exponential not quadratic. Quadratic growth involves an increase proportional to the square of the quantity.

Doing domain driven design could help with this. So, basically, making the domain smaller and the work small rather than interweaving everything together.
