Sometimes it happens that the charging cord gets stuck, and you cannot remove it either from the charging station or from the car. It's known to occur with J1772 charging stations. There's a latch on some stations that can get stuck, preventing the cord from being removed.

I've encountered this problem with certain ChargePoint stations. Even though authenticated with the station, with a message displayed to remove the cord and start charging, you cannot pull the cord out. No matter how you pull and yank, the cord won't budge. I'm told the older CT2000 stations can fail this way, and that the newer CT4000 stations do not.

Some electric cars also have a latch that can prevent cord removal. The idea is preventing other people from unplugging your car. But some cars have a bug that keeps the latch engaged even when it's the owner who is trying to get the cord disconnected so they can drive away.


The workaround is to use a long thin stiff thing, like a long-bladed screwdriver, to reach in and disengage the latch. Here's the effect you're trying to achieve:

You are probably thinking I'm nuts to suggest sticking a metal thing inside an active power outlet. Look carefully, though, at the physical structure of the plug and socket. The location of the active electrical contacts is well protected from the location of the latch. It's safe.

Thank I waited on hold with the help line for 30 min with no answer and thought I might never get loose. No kill button on my charging station and the app would not stop the charging session either. You saved the day! Thank

I'm stuck at a charger right now at UCSD. What's more, is I'm using the app and I don't have a card. When I press stop on the app it tells me that UCSD prevents people from stopping charging so that more people can charge. I am a hostage, and I have an Uber Eats order to go pick up.

Dude I had this happen at the EXACT SAME PLACE YOU'RE IN! When I was over, the city of Irvine had disabled the ability for the phone app to remotely stop charge, so I litterally just had to wait for it to finish which took FOREVER. Really hope something is done about this, this is crazy.

Good to know. I had the opposite problem with an old Chargepoint DC charger. It wouldn't have any reaction on RFID card and when using NFC on my phone it would show ERROR # on its 2 line display. After that the phone loses cellular connection and must be restarted.

I’m using the Bluedot app which starts the charge over the internet and there’s no stop button 😭. I can’t use the ChargePoint card to stop

Dude - awesome tip. I was also in the same boat couple of evenings ago. I didn't have my rfid card with me, but I found that I could tap my phone on the RFID reader to stop charging.

Feedback for chargepoint (the company) - clear instructions on the panel would help . I think EVGo does this.

I typically charge close to home so on a late night like that I would have left it an walked home 😆 lol

Remember you can call customer support and ask them to stop the session.

Nope. Still stuck on a Shell and ABB charger. Something to do with emergency stop and the Shell/ABB machine being disconnected from the network and the machine's own electronic sense of the charging cable being partially disconnected from the main unit (i.e., the charger).
