I think it’s very honourable that he stayed with the company for financial stability. That is a quality that is extremely admirable. Respect to you sir.

Damn. That hits deep for me. Turn 40 next year. Been with the same company for 17 years. Worked my way to the top just below the owner. Great company, but can’t help the feeling that I’ve stayed too long…have tried to start my own side businesses in the past but always do the safe thing and stay at the company. Now that we have kids it makes it even harder to take the risk…

I did IT for awhile, help desk stuff. Stable job ( until it wasn't ) and my days were filled with menial tasks. Some of it was ok, like managing thousands of Chromebooks with scripts or troubleshooting network issues. But most of it was frustratingly simple and a waste of my time and talent.

But now I'm getting back into software engineering like I had been almost 15 years ago and it's a big risk that I can manage. I have anxiety. I don't feel confident in my skills all the time. I wonder what the job market will be like with AI in the future. But I finally realized that I can't live my life thinking about my potential instead of living up to it. No one's coming to save you. No one's going to provide you with a magical opportunity that's going to turn your life around. You gotta focus on what you want the most and be willing to challenge yourself and walk that unknown path with that goal in your head every day.

If you think you can do something, friggin' try; you owe it to yourself.

He remind me of my father and I am beyond grateful for this kind of person. I am able to learn so much and have freedom of direction in life because of this kind of support. It’s not easy to sacrifice dreams for family stability but people like this deserve the world.

I just retired at 65 and my advice is if you can hustle and make it on your own don’t EVER work for a company.

It’s sad but it’s really nice that he just cared about providing for the family even though he was stressed and overworked
