Elderly people where I live do temporary perms, as in they get rollers and just roll their hair (wet) and then take it out the next morning.
For anyone curious about the science and chemistry of it, here's the facts:

The human hair contains 4 chemical bonds 2 of said bonds explain why we can shape hair differently.

Hydrogen bonds are weak bonds that break down at the touch of water. This explains how you can shape hair a certain way after getting it wet, once the water evaporates, the hydrogen bonds rebuild themselves and that rebuilding causes your hair to maintain the shape you put them in until they get wet again. That is why using perm rods with just water works if you want a temporary perm. Keep in mind that there's water molecules in the air that touches hair, that's why you can't use just water to create a permanent style.

During a chemical perm procedure, we hairdressers use a liquid formula of ammonium thioglycolate which break down Disulfur bonds in the human hair. After we have put the hair in a desired shape, with some time and other factor we rebuild the Disulfur bonds again with a fixing reagent. There is no other way to break down Disulfur bonds without serious chemicals so you dont have to worry about using styling/haircare products on perms.

I have always liked how wavy/curly hair looked on me, I've done rollers before, I curled it with heat everything, and I did this EVERYDAY, so when I didn't do it I felt super uncomfortable. So to combat that I got a perm, and it's been the BEST thing. Literally just do whatever ya want, there will be people who tell ya "get it!" "DONT get it!" It's really just down to whatever ya wanna do and whatever ya see fit :)

Not taking advice by someone without hair. (It's a joke)

I got a perm a few months back. It was the best decision I've ever made (appearance-wise). I had a two-block haircut, and the perm made me look infinitely better. I'm not even sure how it made me look that good, it just did. People thought it was my natural hair lol, it fit that well. It's buzzed now, but I'm certainly going back to it once it's long enough again.

I have never bleached or permed my hair before this point and I had little to no damage to my hair. I now have a perm and my hair is still just as soft and still as healthy as ever with very little damage that isn't noticeable. I understand that not everyone is going to have my experience but for people like me who had little to no damage in the first place, I recommend it

The information you gave was exactly what I needed to hear, as usual you have great timing, am starting to do perms and was confused regarding the band placement on the rods and am glad you addressed how to inquire getting videos on how to roll hair on rods only and not the total process of perms. You are doing a great job with your channel.

Personally I got a perm and as a person with more straight hair and wanted a more wavy texture, I recommend it. Yes there are other ways to get waves in your hair, but it may also be quite time consuming and/or not the same result you're looking for. As far as I know, the perm didn't really damage my hair, at least it still feels mostly the same, just a bit more wave to it. Sometimes a bit drier, but that can be fixed with products. Also doesn't cause more breakage/hair fall or whatever.

I did one yesterday to straight my hair and make it thinner, and I am really happy with it. Instead of have it curly now its wavy and instead of black is dark brown so it makes it look cooler and with way more movement. But yeah, I tried a lot of haircuts in the last 2 years and hated every moment of it, now is the first time I look at my hair and like it.

If you’re reading this 😳 GET THE PERM! It’s the best choice I’ve ever made in the past 3 years. So many girls and guys commenting on my hair. Please seek a professional of course never try doing it yourself.

Your honesty is refreshing; perms are not for everyone unfortunately.

I think I enjoyed doing perm. I usually do Keratin treatment or rebonding to get a straight hair but then I finally realized that it's just giving me a basic appearance. I did perm for the very first time (hoping that it'll not looking weird) and thank god, I think I just made the best decision in my life. I love that it gave my hair more volume and I felt so much confidence with my look. It made me look cooler than before. So, despite what people around you says, just do things that make you feel safe & happy with your look. ❤

I recommend getting a looser perm if you ever decide to perm you're hair, having a tight perm causes more hair to fall out (coming from a perm head)

I got a perm when I was 18. I LOVED it! My hair was still healthy, thick and gorgeous! It was so much less maintenance.

I wore my hair permed for YEARS. I also had it highlighted and I never had an issue with damage or dryness. I did take care of it and conditioned A LOT. It made my hair seem or appear thicker (I have fine hair). It obviously gave me body and volume I would not have had otherwise, and I got more compliments on it when I wore it curly than any other hair style I have ever had in my life. In fact, I would love to wear it that way again, but honestly, it requires so much maintenance, and it takes so long to perfect the look, I really wouldn't have time for it these days.

My hair is uber straight and stubborn. More stubborn than anyone I know with wavy or curly hair. I had my hair permed for 2 years a few years ago and it was so much easier to deal with, and the damage was just enough to reduce the greasiness while still being healthy feeling. I have been so frustrated with it lately I’m looking for a professional to start perming my hair again. Oh and perms have never curled my hair. The most is they get a very slight wave that basically doesn’t even look like a wave, but it straightens out easily with a basic blow dry and holds curls 1000x better and with less product. Perms forever for me!

I think the title is a bit going overboard lol. Getting a perm is okay as long as you are not getting it too much and using healing products. Also, if someone wants a permanent perm for a while the self-water perm you showed us will be very annoying to do every day or two days lol. There is no way I could do that. I would just get frustrated and get an actual perm done. Yes the method you showed us may be suitable for people who just want to see what they would/could look like with a perm but def not an alternative for a perm.

Got a perm, hair keeps falling out, and it turned my hair to a slight reddish tint (everyone thought I had actually dyed it, but I didn't). Probably won't ever get a perm ever again, it's too damaging. It did look good for my face shape, but not worth it to damage the scalp and hair.

My mother once made perm in 1997 at age of 26, and her hair was never so majesic like from pictures between 1989-1996. I was just few months old then. My father loved curly hair and my mother wanted to surprise him but unfortunately perm damaged her hair a lot later.
