Big Flies & Big Fish- Epic Late Season Fishing Adventures

Dustin and i head into one of our favourite fishing spots deep in the back country off the north island. we had been waiting for this trip for some time. the objective was to experiment and catch fish with very big flies! game changers and large articulated streamers. The fishing was tough and we put this down to it being so late in the season that the fish have become inactive. looking forward to try to catch more rainbow and brown trout with this Technic next season.

If I may offer a streamer tip - give the fly a couple strips as soon as it hits the water, and then let it sink. Sometimes the splash gets their attention and you want it to look alive right away.

Awesome video.
I think the line mends are actually putting slack in the line and that's why you're missing the takes. A lot of fish will come to the splash. Just cast out, couple of strips then let it sink.
Also hang the flies at the end, be surprised how many fish take as you lift the flies up!
Been doing this on British rivers and it's lethal 😉

My father would use a streamer imitating a white bait on the Oreti river using a bamboo fly rod back in the 70s never failed.

I'm no expert at streamers, but I like to make sure to sharpen the pants off the hooks before using them. I think the fish like to nip at streamers and pester the struggling fish before committing to a full strike, so you want that hook to really dig in and penetrate even a hard palate of the fishes mouth on half strikes. Also stinger hooks almost all the way out the back.
