RIP Ken Mattingly, who just passed away. The men of Apollo 13 owe you their lives - and you saved the American Space Program.

"I'm listening."

Two of the most important words in an engineer's vocabulary.

I used this scene as inspiration to get a girl I was dating car started once. We were in BFE and it would not start. Amps are everything so I disconnected all the fuses for the big radiator fan and managed to get enough power out of the battery to turn the starter and we were good and I reconnected the fan. She was mad impressed by my skills even though I knew in my mind it was a long shot.

Who knew watching a needle on an ammeter could provide so much dramatic tension? One of the best scenes in a great film.

That 3 second scene of them rolling up at the command center, tires squealing, getting out of the car ready to rock... low key one of the best parts of the movie

The "I think we got it, buddy" line is one that's always stuck out as one of my favorites. Not as famous as "Houston, we have a problem" or "Failure is not an option, " but it was such a satisfying moment.

Ken Mattingly has every right to be called a hero for his tireless work in getting the crew of Apollo 13 home. RIP Admiral Mattingly, and Thank-you for your Service!!!

I'm a retired industrial engineer, and this scene rings extremely true. Lining up a procedure within an unreasonable set of external parameters is hardcore reality, regardless of the stakes.

Ken getting stuck on earth due to a suspect measles exposure pretty much saved the mission. I've always said the universe has a way of figuring these things out. He was a true hero...

_”….I think we got it, buddy”_

Six words that saved three lives.

This is what so impresses me about Apollo 13, and why it remains, IMO, the most impressive feat of the entire space program. Even above the lunar landing. These guys didn’t have the luxury of calculating everything beforehand. They were flying by the seat of their pants, operating in completely unknown territory, ingenuity forced by necessity, and if they failed, people died.

It’s truly remarkable that we got Lovell, Swigert, and Haise back alive, and the whole ordeal demonstrates the collaborative brilliance and determination that defined the space program. I still consider it humanity’s finest hour.

Ken Mattingly being grounded contributed to saving Apollo 13. Crazy how fate or luck (depending what you believe in) works sometimes.

I read his obituary in The Times yesterday. He said he had his own personal thermostat. If he had been on the mission in a frozen command module, he would have ceased to function, mentally. he was in the right place, at the right time. A blessing. And an amazing man, pilot, engineer, and astronaut.

The astronaut portrayed by Gary Sinise - TK 'Ken' Mattingly - died 10.31.23 age 87. He became the command module pilot (CMP) on Apollo 16 in 1972 and commanded two space shuttle missions in the 1980s.

These two (like every character in this biopic) were extraordinarily well-cast.
