“Driving a toaster through a car wash” is probably the best comparison for something like that.

The astronaut portrayed by Gary Sinise - Thomas K. 'Ken' Mattingly II - died 10.31.23 age 87. He became the command module pilot (CMP) on Apollo 16 in 1972 and commanded two space shuttle missions in the 1980s.

My mom worked for one of the subcontractors of the guidance computer in Milwaukee, WI and I hate when people say we didn't land on the moon, denigrating her contribution and thousands like her. Her specialty was electronic components, including soldering them! So her work helped get them safely back to earth!

If during assembly if the internal wiring or components were not PERFECTLY sealed it would have shorted and they would have died. The number of variables is astonishing.

The phone in your pocket has more power than the computers they used to pull this off. Think about that for a minute

I cry every time I watch this scene and this point in the whole movie. What a masterful job, on zero sleep.

"Ill bet you do" - a great line because that Kevin Bacon's character had to sub in for Gary Sinise's

"we were expecting you to be towing a couple hundred pounds of moon rocks."

50+ years later It's still amazing they powered up that ship despite being blown up and limited resources, absolutely incredible they were so lucky that nothing else in that ship got screwed up during power up.

They filmed this scene and others in "zero gravity." Not actual zero gravity, but in a plane that simulates zero gravity.

You could see Jack's conference was shaken from the explosion when he goes to fire up the Command Module

In reality this process took nearly two hours, no wonder Jack was exhausted!

It is surreal that they didn’t short out!
