When your mom believes in you like this, there is nothing you can't do.

The look in her eyes. She's not putting on a brave face - she *KNOWS* he can bring them home safely.

Blanche was 74. Not only had she survived two World Wars, she raised Jim *by herself* since he was 5 (her husband, Jim's father, died in a car accident) during the Great Depression. If you want to know where Jim got his strength, it was from her. She knows her son, so she's not saying this line lightly. Even though she probably never said it real life, she never gave up hope and confidence even when everyone around her was preparing for the worst.

If they could get a washing machine to fly, my Jimmy could land it.

One of my favorite lines in the film.

I cry every time I see this. She looks a lot like my Grandma, has the same strength and my Dad was a pilot through three wars. Ron Howard is the man.

Dude, Jim Lovell’s mother sounded badass. RIP. I love this quote from this movie. My grandma laughs every time she hears this quote because she acts the same way. God bless her wherever she is. ❤️🙏🏻✝️👍🏻

Ron Howard's mom killed it in this scene... pretty amazing!

Everybody assumes that she's senile, but with just that one sentence she shows that she's absolutely not.

Marilyn: "Blanche, these nice young men are going to watch the television with you. This is Neil Armstrong, and this is Buzz... Aldrin."

Neil Armstrong:
"Hi."

Blanche:
"Are you boys in the space program too?"

I had a pretty good laugh watching this movie for the first time.

I love how when she first heard that "there's been an explosion", she looks at her grandkids and her next words are comfort to them.

Happy mother's day

Ron Howard’s mom did so well she’s the most memorable side character in the movie.

When your mom's got your back harder than any squad!

This is such a great scene, Blanche isn't quite all there any more, and it's shown even in this scene. But as Marilyn explains, and as Susan starts to cry, the look of clarity crosses her face, and after Susan nods yes, that she's scared, that little smile from Blanche is fantastic. She has no doubt in her son, "don't you worry" she says, he'll be just fine.

When I saw this as a kid with my family in the theatre, this scene got such a big laugh. They were trying to be so delicate with Jim Lovell's mom who ends up being tougher than any of them.

The wisdom and sincerity in her voice is so comforting.

My grandpa and I went to check on our hunting camp in the middle of winter. Hit a patch of ice and went skidding sideways at 40mph on a mountain road in Pennsylvania. I hear him from the passenger seat say with full confidence, "you got it." Somehow, I got that truck back under control and I know he was the reason why. Miss you, pop.

RIP Jean Speegle Howard (January 31, 1927 – September 2, 2000), aged 73

It's amazing how she totally comes across as a sweet old lady with maybe a touch of senility or dementia, but man when she delivers that one line, you realize where Lovell got his guts and determination. RIP Ms. Howard.
