2018 Ford Ranger Wildtrak v Mercedes-Benz X-Class v Volkswagen Amarok | Comparison Test

It’s time to head outback in the Mercedes-Benz X-Class and see how it stacks up against the conditions and some strong competition.

Havent driven the Benz but have driven the Ford VW and th Hilux. I have to agree its got to be the Ranger. The Amorok was pretty good but I have kids and I am not going to compromise thier safety. I did think the Hilux was pretty good in the bush though and on a road only test drive I thought the Colorado was ok but no propper rear diff puts me off.

all the off road comparisons have shown the vw not to require a low speed gear box.

fair comparison with a good result, i have to agree the Wildtrack is a brilliant unit and the Amarok 4 cylinder is also a great unit too with the Navara finishing behind the the other two for almost everything.

Why wouldn’t you use the v6 amarok? You can get the v6 for cheaper than the Benz

Maybe Ford Rangers in Australia are better built than the ones we get in South Africa. I drive a Ford Ranger and my colleagues laugh at me constantly because it keeps having problems. Yet in all Australian review it comes up tops. I need a Hilux

Not sure I agree with the unqualified statement that the VW lack of low range makes it uncompetitive off road. So far from what I have seen the VW drivetrain, especially with the V6 powering it, makes my Willdtrack look and feel dated. I bet most will follow eventually with 8spd plus auto gearbox that have a wide ratio and permanent 4x4. Perhaps the ranger will eventually do it with that new 10spd auto

The latest series 2 ford ranger has had massive recalls, and is know to catch on fire, and the transmissions to blow up too. Bugger that, id take the Amarok ANYDAY of the week.


The transmissions are know throughout the industry to grenade.

Fords have continuously failed durability and flexibility tests in Africa. Same as the Nissan Hardbody. I would go with the Hilux!!!

That Ford is the biggest piece of S***! Amarok or Benz but not that Ford, NO! If it were my choice, Hilux. But as usual so called car reviewers think they know better...
