The royal feast is in full swing, and laughter echoes through the Great Hall of King’s Landing. Olenna Tyrell, moving through the crowd with practiced grace, brushes past Sansa Stark, whose hands tremble as she adjusts her delicate hairnet. Olenna’s fingers move deftly, plucking the seed hidden among the crystals, saying that she wishes to simply adjust a few stray strands.
But as the feast grows rowdier, with drunken nobles, performers, and loud, raucous jests filling the air, movement becomes difficult, especially for one such as Olenna due to her advanced years.
As she approaches the king’s table, her oafish son, Mace brushes into her, causing her grip to clench up, crushing the seed in her hands. Most of the poison disappears on the floor. Her mouth tightens in frustration, but the moment passes too quickly for anyone to notice, she manages to slip what little remains into Joffrey’s cup. She lingers long enough to see it disappear and mix with the wine.
Joffrey’s voice rings out above the din, mocking his uncle with cruel japes as the massive pie is presented. He summons Tyrion to serve him. The dwarf obeys, his face a mask of restraint, pouring the king’s wine. Olenna watches from her seat, her chest tightening as Joffrey drinks deeply from the goblet. The poison takes longer than expected, and for a moment, she wonders if her plan has failed. But then Joffrey begins to cough, his laughter breaking into a hoarse, hacking gasp.
The hall falls silent as Joffrey rises, clutching his throat. His face turns red, then purple, and the queen screams his name. Olenna shouts for someone to help him and Kingsguard rushes forward while Margery screams at his side.
He collapses onto the floor, convulsing, his hands clawing at his throat. The crowd surges forward, but Margery rushes to his side first, cradling his head in her lap as tears streak her face. Joffrey’s eyes roll back, and he gurgles incoherently, pointing a trembling finger at Tyrion before his body goes limp. Gasps ripple through the hall, and the Kingsguard form a protective circle around their fallen king.
Cersei: Tyrion, it was him. Arrest him!
The accusation spreads like wildfire and Lannisters’ guards seize Tyrion. Olenna remains seated, her face impassive as Pycelle hurries to check on the king. To his surprise, he finds a pulse, one weak and unsteady, but present.
Olenna grips the tablecloth in front of her. This was not the clean execution she had planned; the king still breathes, but she forces herself to remain calm. In the days that follow, the capital buzzes with speculation. Joffrey, though alive, remains bedridden, his breathing shallow and labored.
It takes slow a process, but Pycelle and the other maesters heal the king. To dissuade any suspicion, the Tyrells send their maester to care for him. This was a huge hole in their plan and they must tread carefully. Meanwhile, their investigations lead them to suspect that poison was used, leading them to believe Tyrion poisoned the cup while serving as Joffrey’s cupbearer and is imprisoned.
Unfortunately, this also means that trying to strike at him again is risky. With many believing the assassin is already in custody, trying to poison him again will only raise suspicion, and he is watched at all times by his mother or the Kingsguard. Instead, Olenna switches tactics and decides to make the most of this opportunity by making Margery invaluable.
Margery scarcely leaves his side, her delicate hands tending to him with apparent devotion. She dabs his brow with a damp cloth, feeds him sips of broth, and whispers words of comfort that make even the hardened maids weep.
Joffrey, weakened and vulnerable, clings to her presence. Each time she smiles at him, her eyes shimmering with feigned tenderness, he seems to soften, his cruel edges dulled by her unwavering care.
But few pay attention to this as all eyes turn to the Lannisters. With Tyrion awaiting trial, Tywin tries to maintain his control over the capital. He issues edicts preventing any of the smallfolk from mentioning this effect, ensures that food flows into the city, and meets with his bannermen who help maintain security.
Among the groups they pay close attention to are the Sparrows, victims of the War of the Five Kings who are flocking to King’s Landing to demand justice for the terror inflicted upon them and the smallfolk. Soon, a leader forms in this group by the name of the High Sparrow.
Though he has no armies or wealth, his speeches within the city move people. His sermons draw crowds that spill into the alleys.
Tywin tries to buy them time, reminding them that the king is indisposed and unable to rule properly. While some are sympathetic, the High Sparrow keeps a close eye on them.
