After 40+ years of a career that was not my main choice but just happened to be well paid and all consuming, it has taken me about 5 years of retirement to be capable of enjoying relaxation without feeling guilty.

playing is not doing nothing. It's building memories for yourself and your family. It's a treasure.

100% I've burnt out twice. It isn't good.

Basically, if you aren't having fun at some point each day, without feeling guilty, you're pushing too hard.

The best career advice that I learned is don’t ever attach your-self to a PERSON, a place, a company, an organization or a project. Only Attach your-self to your mission in life and your PURPOSE. That’s how you keep your power and keep your peace!

I despise how "playing" has been made into a bad thing, it even ruined part of dating for me, as every time I asked what people did outside work and study, I didn't get answers. Sad really.

You can't perform at your best when you're not feeling at your best. Such a simple concept but we can really dig a black hole within our own minds quite easily. Stay strong and love life.

I agree strongly with the part where he says basically that if you're able to get into a mood to play, then you know things are going right, because you wouldn't be able to otherwise. So underrated.

I wrote a lament in my poetry 25 years ago... “we’ve forgotten the rules of children’s games.” Indeed.

I found that small talk with random people really brightens up my day. After work, I may head to a gas station or grocery store for stuff I need to get, but actually conversing with people there instead of uttering the same monotonous responses like "hi, doing good, thanks, you too" over and over again... Talking with those same people about their day and how it's been at their work instead of internalizing and getting too much in my own head.

He's spot on about "Sustainable productivity". At my previous work, 1 month in to starting it my manager warned our group: "If we don't succeed the next months demo, we are all fired". I worked 110 hour weeks for about a month or two, under the stress of getting fired at a work I just started (as a junior engineer, under a pandemic). I was productive as fuck, but it also depleted a lot of long-term enthusiasm and energy. Turns out the manager misunderstood company KPI system and was exaggerating a lot. But work wasn't quite the same after and I eventually quit due burnout with depression and a broken relationship.

Things are better now, but buying in to the "productivity dream" have its limit and people should be aware that some of it is toxic af.

Alan Watt's point about self improvement went further. He took the position that you cannot improve yourself, because the one who needs to do the improving is the one who needs to be improved. It's like trying to lift yourself up by your own bootstraps. You can't do it. But the thing is that if you stop trying to improve yourself, then you have lots of energy to do things you want to do. You'll be relaxed, and happier. And then people will look at you and say "My, haven't you improved!".

Walking and hiking are some of the best things a person can do for their mental health. Something about it is very meditative. Also it's like a link back to our ancestors time in the trees.
