If anyone is asking why hes calculating this: he was close to the world trade center when it was hit. This was a scientists way of dealing with the trauma that comes along with something so intense. I can understand in a dumb person way. You want to figure out everything that happened exactly and its just kind of sad almost. Glad to see hes doing well with it that he can talk about it.
