What if the Water Tribe Attacked the Air Nomads

In the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, all nations lived together in harmony, until those jerks over in the Fire Nation attacked. At least that’s the story we know. And it makes sense, in the original show, the Fire Nation were mostly evil a lot of the time and doing terrible things, but today we wanted to present a slightly different scenario. What if the Water Tribes attacked and shook up the balance of the world instead of the Fire Nation?

That opens up a whole range of different possibilities. Yes, maybe at first the Water Tribes don’t seem as threatening as the powerful Fire Nation, but let’s not forget something. In The Legend of Korra, we saw not one, but two powerful Water Bending Big Bads and the amount of destruction they were able to cause was huge. If that sort of mentality existed for the Water Tribes back before Sozin stepped in, then things could’ve been a lot different. Sure, they don’t have as much brute force, but they have a closer connection to the spirits than any other nation. Could they use that to attack the entire world?

Here's some ideas I have to add on to this.
The Fire Lord's ultimate plan in the end was to scorch the earth with the help of Sozin's Comet. Maybe whoever rules this AU Water Nation will wait for a certain event (like an eclipse or something) and try to flood the world. Make the planet 90-95% water, turning most of the lands into islands. Making it all easy pickings for Water Tribe Fleets.

Katara and Sokka's father is like a high ranking general and to prove his loyalty to the water tribe he must bring the Avatar and his children back. Creating almost a Zuko equivalent as the man would actually struggle to choose between his family and his country.

The one thing I have a hard time figuring out is Zuko and his family. Are they still horrible people or because of the alternate bad guys the Fire Lord's family didn't devolve into egomaniacal, genocidal tyrants? Assuming the latter, I could see Zuko and maybe Azula being more help then the Earth Kingdom was. They actually provide aid to the Avatar whenever they found them, sheltering them, feeding them, maybe Zuko even teaches Aang fire bending quicker then water and earth. And maybe a slight romance between Azula and Sokka, no particular reason, just to drive people nuts!

Hard to really say about the Spirit side of things. Maybe because spirits will be more on the Water Tribe's side providing an additional skill Aang will have to learn in order to fight them. Of course the people that control or summon the spirits will be a minority, maybe called an Inquisitor, and are only called in to deal with harder problems.

This one's more for Korra. Because of being a water tribe Avatar, some members of the old regime try to kidnap her in order to brainwash her into thinking their way, so she had to be transported to another nation, possibly an air nomad area, or was passed around to every nation giving her a bit more world experience and not closed off like in canon. Maybe because of this she learned air bending faster, but then I guess we couldn't call it "Book One: Air." She could have met Asami sooner at some point, maybe make other friends that were never shown in the shown. Honestly the possibilities are numerous with this one.

There is a popular fan comic and fanfic series called Distorted Reality its about an evil Water Tibe and Aang travels with Azula and Zuko.

In all honestly, I could see a scenario where the Water Tribes turn into a nation of pirates/raiders like the Vikings. The poles where they live is nothing more than a frozen wasteland. It would make sense if Water Tribe warriors regularly raided the other nations, maybe even conquer some islands and lands close to the shoreline.
